OpenAI Unveils Mobile Codex Feature in ChatGPT Application
- OpenAI has introduced a dedicated Codex tab within the ChatGPT mobile application, enabling users to oversee their AI coding endeavors directly from their smartphones.
- “Step away from your laptop,” the developers at OpenAI quipped on X, referencing a burgeoning trend among users.
This innovative feature promises to be invaluable for the open-laptop walkers, granting them enhanced mobility to operate their Codex AI coding application while on the move.
On Thursday, OpenAI announced the mobile Codex integration available through the ChatGPT app. Users will not program directly on handheld devices; rather, they can initiate new coding projects or monitor existing tasks while Codex executes its functions remotely on a desktop or Mac Mini.
“A prompt approval, a swift response, or a necessary adjustment can significantly affect the trajectory of work, preventing it from stagnating or veering off course,” remarked Codex product manager Hannah Koch in correspondence with Business Insider.
The ChatGPT mobile app allows users to browse threads, evaluate outputs, validate commands, and modify models—all from their mobile devices.
In essence, this development enhances remote control of Codex, potentially encouraging users to forgo their laptops in favor of increased flexibility.

“As agents undertake prolonged projects, a novel paradigm of collaboration is taking shape,” an OpenAI blog post states.
“To sustain momentum, one must effortlessly address inquiries, review Codex findings, recalibrate directions, endorse subsequent steps, or introduce new concepts.”
The emergence of AI coding solutions has culminated in a phenomenon where individuals traverse public spaces with laptops ajar, allowing local Codex agents to persist in their operations.
Many previous coders have shared their experiences carrying these semi-open laptops to workplaces, educational institutions, and recreational venues like ice rinks. (Notably, tech aficionados have highlighted alternative methods to keep laptops functioning while closed.)
This peculiar trend has rapidly evolved into a cultural meme, one that OpenAI embraced earlier this month, teasing that “iykyk but we may be in for a treat soon .”
“If the device enters sleep mode, or if you’re not present to authorize subsequent actions, progress is halted,” Koch elaborated regarding the “open-laptop phenomenon.”
Preceding its Thursday announcement, OpenAI playfully engaged with this trend through a video posted on its developers’ X account, showcasing multiple laptops propped open just enough to maintain functionality.
“Step away from your laptop,” the developers reiterated on X. “Continue innovating with Codex on your mobile device.”

Koch emphasized that integrating Codex into mobile platforms “empowers individuals to leave their laptops at home.”
“With Codex operating in a dedicated or remote environment, the reliance on an open laptop becomes obsolete,” she concluded.
