Apple has unveiled the 26.5 updates for its iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS platforms. The hallmark of this release is the introduction of end-to-end encryption for RCS messages.

While Android users have enjoyed this security feature through the Google Messages app for several years, iMessage on iPhones has also long supported encryption.

Now, RCS messages exchanged between Android and iPhone users will benefit from enhanced encryption.

This end-to-end encrypted RCS messaging feature is currently in beta on iOS 26.5 and is only accessible through select carriers.

In the United States, major providers including AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile have already adopted this capability. A comprehensive list of supported carriers worldwide can be found on this page.

“Encryption is activated by default and will progressively be enabled for both new and existing RCS conversations,” Apple stated today. A distinctive lock icon will appear in RCS chats to signify that a conversation is protected by end-to-end encryption.

Google and Apple have spearheaded an industry-wide initiative to implement end-to-end encryption in Rich Communication Services (RCS), enhancing security and privacy for this modern messaging format that supplants traditional SMS.

Google Messages users will recognize a cross-platform conversation as end-to-end encrypted when they observe the familiar lock icon used in RCS chats,” Google confirmed today.

Additionally, iOS 26.5 brings forth several noteworthy features:

  • Suggested Places in Apple Maps: The app will now suggest nearby locations based on recent searches while navigating.
  • Bluetooth Accessory Pairing: Wireless devices like Apple’s Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse, and Magic Trackpad will now remain connected automatically via Bluetooth upon being plugged in.
  • Live Activities Support for Third-Party Accessories: This feature, limited to the EU, will allow third-party devices to receive notifications and Live Activities from an iPhone.
  • New App Store Purchase Option: iPhone users outside of the United States can opt for monthly payments on annual subscriptions with a 12-month commitment.

Moreover, a vibrant Pride Luminance wallpaper that dynamically refracts a spectrum of colors is now available on iOS 26.5, iPadOS 26.5, and watchOS 26.5.

A smartphone displaying a news article about an iOS update rests on a desk with a coffee cup, glasses, and a computer monitor in the background.

Apple Watch users will also have access to a new Pride Luminance watch face, featuring unique customization options.

This update additionally resolves an issue wherein messages defaulted to SMS rather than iMessage when using a dual-SIM iPhone.
