Curtin University Welcomes Carl Solder as Adjunct Professor to Accelerate Technological Innovation
Curtin University has appointed Carl Solder, a luminary in the global technology sector, as an Adjunct Professor. This strategic move aims to expedite innovation and cultivate the next wave of tech talent.
As the Chief Technology Officer of Cisco for Australia and New Zealand, Mr. Solder brings an extensive reservoir of expertise garnered over a remarkable 40-year tenure across Australia, New Zealand, the Asia-Pacific region, and the United States—19 of which were spent in the hallowed halls of Silicon Valley.
During his time in the United States, Mr. Solder was integral to Cisco’s core engineering teams, significantly contributing to the advancement of transformative enterprise, data center, and cloud networking products.
His endeavors have been critical in shaping the digital frameworks for numerous Fortune 500 corporations, thus positioning him at the pinnacle of the global technology landscape.
In his role at Curtin, Mr. Solder will engage in mentoring students, leading specialized seminars, and imparting unique insights into the practical dimensions of networking technologies and the strategic leadership essential for triumph in the international tech arena.
Mr. Solder expressed that his appointment as Adjunct Professor represents not only a “profound honour” but also a “full-circle moment,” having completed his undergraduate studies at Curtin in 1984.
“It is immensely gratifying to contribute to an institution that laid the groundwork for my professional journey,” Mr. Solder articulated.
“I am eager to interact with the forthcoming generation of technologists, sharing the invaluable lessons acquired from the epicenter of Silicon Valley, and assisting students in navigating the swiftly transforming landscape of global technology.”
His appointment comes through the auspices of the Curtin Institute for Data Science, enabling collaboration with Innovation Central Perth, a pioneering industry-research collaboration established by Curtin in conjunction with Cisco.
Professor Melanie Johnston-Hollitt, Executive Director of the Curtin Institute for Data Science, lauded Mr. Solder’s appointment as a testament to Curtin and Cisco’s unwavering commitment to fostering innovation and shaping the future of tech leadership.

Christian Badenhorst, a student in Computer Systems and Networking at Curtin, first encountered Mr. Solder during an internship at ICP.
He remarked that the appointment would furnish him with invaluable real-world insights into the networking domain he aspires to join post-graduation.
“Carl is remarkably down-to-earth and approachable, and his extensive knowledge in his field will undoubtedly make him an outstanding professor,” Mr. Badenhorst noted.
