New Delhi, September 12:
Zupee, a prominent player in the gaming sector, has announced a significant reduction in its workforce, impacting approximately 170 employees. This decision arises amidst a tumultuous period for the online gaming industry in India, which is grappling with a myriad of challenges. The gaming platform’s layoffs are precipitated by the recent enactment of the Online Gaming Act 2025, a legislative measure that explicitly prohibits real-money online gaming.
According to a report from Moneycontrol, this reduction constitutes nearly 30 percent of Zupee’s total staff. The ramifications of the nationwide prohibition on real-money gaming have compelled Zupee to reassess its employee base. In terms of support, the company has indicated that departing employees will receive additional financial assistance commensurate with their tenure, which could extend to a maximum of six months of support, in addition to the mandatory notice period.

In a statement, Zupee’s CEO, Dilsher Singh Malhi, remarked, “This has been an arduous decision for us, yet it was imperative to align with the new regulatory landscape. Our departing colleagues have been pivotal to Zupee’s evolution, and we are immensely grateful for their contributions in shaping our platform.”
Malhi further emphasized the company’s commitment to offering robust support to aid staff in transitioning smoothly to new employment opportunities. A dedicated team is being established to collaborate with industry partners, actively seeking job placements for those impacted. Additionally, those affected will receive priority consideration for re-hiring as new roles become available within Zupee.
As a broader trend, various gaming companies in India are implementing layoffs due to the regulatory shifts. The Mobile Premier League (MPL) is reportedly contemplating reductions affecting 60 to 80 percent of its workforce, estimated between 500 to 600 employees. Head Digital Works, operator of A23 Rummy, has already laid off nearly 500 staff members.
Likewise, Baazi Games, supported by Nazara Technologies, has diminished its PokerBaazi team by around 200 employees, representing nearly 45 percent of its workforce. Reports indicate that Games24x7, which oversees Rummy Circle and My11Circle, has also undertaken similar job cuts.
