Raju Vegesna, Zoho’s Chief Evangelist, recently articulated on X the notion of a “productivity tipping point”—a juncture wherein advancements through AI could diminish the necessity for extensive workforces.

“Every industry encounters a productivity tipping point after which employment within that sector begins to diminish. We have observed this persistently, as enhancements in productivity precipitate smaller workforce requirements,” Vegesna articulated.

Drawing historical comparisons, he mentioned, “In the United States, merely 1.5 percent of the workforce is engaged in agriculture today, yet they yield nearly tenfold what 40 percent did previously. Productivity improved. Employment declined. This paradigm is now emerging in the realm of technology.”

Vegesna’s observations resonate with a growing sense of trepidation throughout the technology landscape.

As AI capabilities advance in writing code, rectifying bugs, analyzing data, and even designing systems, companies are positioned to generate an array of products with a leaner workforce.

While there is potential for new roles to materialize, he voices concerns that the overall job market in tech may contract over time, even if this metamorphosis unfolds gradually.

This sentiment is echoed by Sridhar Vembu, Zoho’s co-founder, who has been forthright regarding AI’s transformative influence on software development.

In numerous communications, Vembu elucidated that artificial intelligence is significantly enhancing the output of seasoned engineers while concurrently decreasing the demand for sizable teams of junior developers.

“AI enhances the productivity of senior architects and diminishes the necessity for junior engineers,” Vembu remarked. He likened modern developers to conductors of an orchestra, with AI tools now executing much of the intricate work that previously necessitated entire teams.

Vembu also illustrated a concrete example from within Zoho’s ranks. He recounted how one engineer accomplished the creation of a sophisticated assembly and machine-code security tool within a mere month—a task that conventionally would engage three to four engineers for approximately a year.

“He has developed this alone, in a month, what a team of 3-4 would have taken a year at least,” Vembu noted.

According to Vembu, the engineer credited his achievement to an advanced AI model. “He revealed that he found the Opus 4.5 AI model to be transformative. Prior to utilizing that model, he held a rather lukewarm perspective regarding AI-generated code; however, his viewpoint has since evolved,” he added.

Nevertheless, amid the enthusiasm lies a troubling conundrum. If enterprises opt to hire fewer junior engineers due to AI’s capacity to absorb much of the workload, how will future senior architects receive the necessary training?

“If we do not cultivate junior engineers, we risk stunting the development of the next generation of architects—after all, how does one ascend to a software architect role without first serving as a junior engineer?” he pondered.

Summarizing the scale of this paradigm shift, Vembu compared contemporary AI tools to the industrial machines that once supplanted manual weaving.
