Sridhar Vembu, co-founder and Chief Scientist of Zoho Corporation, recently took to social media to challenge Garry Tan, President and CEO of Y Combinator, asserting that the Indian tech enterprise will not only surpass but also outlast the so-called “vibe coding” firms.

In a post on the platform X, Vembu reacted to Tan’s assertion, which suggested that Zoho Corp. is positioned to be the first casualty in the face of technological competition from users creating proprietary software via vibe coding methodologies.

Vembu countered this perspective, noting that Zoho is currently experiencing customer growth rates exceeding 50%. He challenged Tan to explain how such expansion could occur if the company is truly threatened by these vibe coding enterprises.

“If our business is destined to be the first to be eclipsed by vibe-coded applications, how do we account for our accelerated customer growth (exceeding 50%) at present? And why have we yet to see vibe-coded solutions in email, spreadsheets, accounting, or messaging?” Vembu remarked in his response.

Vembu’s Challenge to Tan

The California-based Y Combinator CEO, Garry Tan, questioned the rationale behind clients paying $30 monthly for a SaaS solution, suggesting that such needs could be addressed with a personalized vibe-code solution developed over a weekend.

“Why spend $30 per seat per month on extensive SaaS offerings when soon even non-technical operators can create a custom solution via vibe coding in just a weekend?” Tan articulated in his post.

Following his statements on Zoho’s trajectory, Sridhar Vembu issued a wager against Tan, asserting that the tech giant is unequivocally poised to outshine and outlast the vibe coding entities amidst ongoing industry discussions.

Despite not being a vibe coding entity itself, Y Combinator does invest in startups that utilize vibe coding techniques to enhance their software development processes.

The Question of Vibe Coding: A Tech Debt Dilemma?

Vibe coding represents a software development technique that empowers individuals to construct entire websites, applications, and more, aided by artificial intelligence (AI) software that automates code generation, eschewing the traditional line-by-line approach.

Vembu further emphasized that companies neglecting to guarantee security, privacy, and compliance for their clients may inadvertently accelerate the accumulation of technical debt by resorting to vibe coding.

“In the absence of these guarantees, vibe coding merely accelerates the build-up of tech debt until the entire structure collapses. For individuals like Garry Tan, this tech debt seems to be a burden passed on to unwary acquirers,” Vembu posited in response to Tan’s remarks.

He articulated that Zoho’s strategic vision is to facilitate a significant enhancement in programmer productivity while concurrently ensuring robust security, privacy, and compliance for its clientele.
