Winkler Faces Cybersecurity Incident
The City of Winkler is currently addressing a significant cybersecurity breach impacting various components of its information technology infrastructure.
Mayor Henry Siemens stated that, in reaction to this incident, the city has initiated an investigation, informed law enforcement authorities, and implemented protective measures to mitigate any potential harm.
“We have successfully isolated the compromised area to prevent any further ramifications,” he noted.
“We also promptly engaged external cybersecurity specialists to ensure that the appropriate expertise was deployed,” he added.
As a precautionary measure, the city has shut down its phone and payment systems, resulting in the following municipal offices being closed indefinitely:
- City Hall
- Public Works
- Meridian Exhibition Centre Office
Mayor Siemens explained that these closures are intended to facilitate a thorough investigation while certain systems remain offline.
“We made these closures proactively to allow staff the opportunity to delve into the situation without the distraction of addressing queries that they currently cannot resolve due to a lack of access to our systems,” he elaborated.
According to a media release from the City of Winkler, both the Meridian Exhibition Centre and the RCU Aquatic Centre are operational and functioning normally.
A Serious Approach to the Incident
Mayor Siemens emphasized that while the city has not yet identified the specifics of the incident, it is addressing the matter with utmost seriousness.
“We are investigating the situation thoroughly. At this moment, we cannot confirm what data may have been compromised, but we will continue our inquiries to ascertain the full extent of what transpired,” he stated.
He noted that while efforts are underway to restore systems expeditiously, safety and security remain paramount.
For now, the priority lies in meticulously examining each detail to determine the nature of the breach, which Mayor Siemens indicated is still too early to ascertain.
“One pressing question people often pose is, ‘Was this a ransomware attack?’ At this point, we are unable to confirm,” he remarked.
Furthermore, it remains undetermined whether employee, customer, utility, or tax information has been affected.
Commitment to Transparency
The mayor reiterated that while the city continues its search for clarity, its systems will stay secure and locked down.
He assured the community that information would be disseminated as soon as it became available.
“We will share details as swiftly as we can,” he affirmed.
“At this juncture, residents need not take any action until we have a clearer understanding of the situation, and we will communicate pertinent information as soon as it becomes available,” he added.
“It is imperative that we thoroughly investigate and then relay our findings as quickly as feasible.”

Despite the ongoing circumstances, Mayor Siemens highlighted that the incident was detected “very early.
He assured residents that essential services remain intact, with the city continuing to provide safe drinking water and respond effectively through fire and police services, despite the cybersecurity concern being actively addressed.
