On Saturday, the White House punctuated its renewed interest by disseminating an AI-generated image depicting the 79-year-old president strolling towards Greenland, accompanied by a penguin, and captioned, “Embrace the penguin.”
For months, Trump has publicly underscored the strategic importance of Greenland for U.S. national security. He previously cautioned Denmark, which governs Greenland, that a failure to broker an agreement could compel Washington to contemplate military intervention.
This provocative rhetoric instigated Denmark and several European partners to bolster their military presence in Greenland, thereby exacerbating diplomatic tensions.
Matters escalated further when Trump unveiled a 10 percent tariff on seven European Union nations and the United Kingdom, directly tied to the Greenland conundrum.
However, these tariffs were later rescinded following a face-to-face discussion with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte during the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Trump indicated that a mutually beneficial framework for Greenland might soon be revealed.
In the lead-up to this announcement, Trump released another AI-generated image featuring Greenland as a U.S. territory, showcasing JD Vance and Marco Rubio at his side as he plants an American flag—an unequivocal assertion of his stance on the area.
The discourse surrounding this issue intensified further when Trump posted yet another AI-generated image on Truth Social, displaying an augmented map of the United States that incorporated Greenland, Canada, and Venezuela.
This image appeared to be digitally modified from an authentic photograph taken during his August 2025 meeting with European leaders, with the enlarged map superimposed in the backdrop.
Since initially broaching the notion of acquiring Greenland shortly after taking office last year, Trump’s rhetoric has escalated notably in recent weeks.
Over the weekend, he threatened to impose a 10 percent tariff on eight European nations, an announcement that rattled investors.
During an extensive, hour-long speech in Davos on Wednesday, he continued to amplify the issue before convening with NATO leaders, heralding plans for a new accord, though specifics remain elusive.
When queried on Thursday regarding a potential financial offer for the semi-autonomous territory, Trump asserted, “We’re not going to have to pay anything other than the fact that we are building the Golden Dome.”
He elaborated that any prospective agreement would ensure the United States had “total access” to Greenland for military operations, stating confidently, “We’re getting everything we want at no cost.”
