New York Governor Launches Smartphone Policy Lookup Website
On Thursday, Governor Kathy Hochul unveiled a dedicated website—ny.gov/phonefree—designed to assist New York’s parents and students in accessing information regarding their school’s specific smartphone usage policies for the upcoming academic year, particularly the newly instituted bell-to-bell restrictions.
According to a press release from Hochul’s office, the platform enables users to search through over 1,050 public school districts, charter schools, and BOCES by either district or school name. This comprehensive initiative covers approximately 96% of the nearly 1,090 districts and schools adhering to the state mandate.
The implementation of these policies is a response to recent legislation enforcing smartphone usage restrictions in K-12 educational institutions throughout New York State.
As school administrators diligently work to establish these standards, families are urged to utilize the newly launched website to familiarize themselves with the specific rules that will govern smartphone access during school hours.
