Additionally, both the United Kingdom and Australia have emerged as significant players in academic AI research, contributing 109,000 and 92,000 publications, respectively.

While Stanford University may face challenges on the football field in 2025, it is undeniably the national champion in academic AI research, as per Studocu’s insights.

The esteemed California institution has published over 12,000 AI-related publications from 2020 to 2024.

Other U.S. institutions appearing in the top ten for “AI-focused” research include, in descending rank, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Princeton University, Harvard University, Johns Hopkins University, Carnegie Mellon University, University of California, Los Angeles, Cornell University, Yale University, and California Institute of Technology.

Globally, Stanford retains its premier standing in academic AI research, supported by four other American institutions occupying the top five: MIT, Princeton, Harvard, and Johns Hopkins.

Moreover, the United Kingdom’s University of Oxford and University of Cambridge are both positioned in the Top 10, ranked sixth and eighth respectively, while Canada’s University of Waterloo holds the ninth spot.

Switzerland’s ETH Zurich and EPFL have also marked their presence in the top 20, underscoring Europe’s ascendance in academic AI research.

Asian academic powerhouses in this domain include Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University and China’s Peking University.
