U.S. Government Halts Anthropic’s AI Technology Amid Controversy
WASHINGTON (AP) — On Friday, the Trump administration issued an edict mandating all U.S. agencies to discontinue the use of Anthropic’s artificial intelligence technology.
This directive, accompanied by significant penalties, marked a highly publicized confrontation between the government and the burgeoning AI firm regarding safety protocols surrounding artificial intelligence.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth officially classified Anthropic as a supply chain risk. This designation has the potential to obstruct U.S. military contractors from collaborating with the firm.
Hegseth’s remarks, conveyed via social media, followed a stringent ultimatum from the Pentagon requiring Anthropic to permit unfettered military utilization of its AI technology or face serious repercussions.
This ultimatum was issued nearly a full day after CEO Dario Amodei asserted that the company “cannot in good conscience comply” with the Defense Department’s stipulations.
Describing the company as “Left-wing extremists,” President Donald Trump criticized Anthropic for attempting to pressure the Pentagon.
On his platform, Truth Social, he proclaimed that most governmental agencies must immediately cease utilizing Anthropic’s AI, while granting the Pentagon a six-month window to phase out any existing integrations of the technology in military systems.
The crux of the defense contract dispute centered on the role of AI in safeguarding national security. Anthropic sought stringent assurances from the Pentagon that its AI, named Claude, would not be employed for mass surveillance of American citizens or for use in fully autonomous weapons.
Following months of private negotiations that erupted into public discourse, the company articulated in a Thursday statement that the newly proposed contract language “framed as a compromise was cloaked in legal jargon that could permit these safeguards to be overlooked at will.”
Although Anthropic, the developer of the chatbot Claude, could absorb the contract loss, the recent ultimatum from Hegseth posed broader implications for a company that has ascended rapidly from a little-known research lab in San Francisco to a formidable player among global startups.
Military officials had warned that the designation of a “supply chain risk” typically associated with foreign adversaries could jeopardize Anthropic’s vital partnerships with other entities.
Trump further indicated that Anthropic could be subject to “significant civil and criminal ramifications” should the company fail to cooperate during the transitional phase-out. Anthropic had yet to provide a response regarding these developments.
The president’s decisive action was preceded by hours of criticism from senior Trump appointees at the Pentagon and the State Department, who took to social media to scrutinize Anthropic’s hesitation in acquiescing to governmental demands.
Senator Mark Warner, a leading Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, expressed concern that the penalties imposed on Anthropic, coupled with inflammatory remarks directed at the company, raise troubling questions about whether national security decisions are rooted in careful analysis or politically motivated considerations.
This dispute has left the AI community in Silicon Valley astonished, prompting an outpouring of support for Amodei from employees of Anthropic’s primary competitors, including OpenAI and Google, who expressed solidarity through open letters and public forums.
The fallout from this conflict may potentially benefit Elon Musk’s competing chatbot, Grok, which the Pentagon intends to integrate with classified military networks.
This situation serves as a cautionary note to other competitors, such as Google and OpenAI, who also maintain contracts to deliver AI tools for military use.
Musk aligned himself with the Trump administration, asserting on his social media platform, X, that “Anthropic detests Western Civilization.”
However, one of Amodei’s primary antagonists—OpenAI CEO Sam Altman—expressed solidarity with Anthropic, questioning the Pentagon’s “menacing” actions in a CNBC interview and suggesting that both OpenAI and much of the AI sector share similar ethical boundaries.
Amodei previously worked at OpenAI before co-founding Anthropic in 2021 with other former leaders of that organization.
“Despite any disagreements I might have with Anthropic, I primarily regard them as a responsible company that genuinely prioritizes safety,” Altman stated during his interview.
Retired Air Force General Jack Shanahan voiced his concerns on social media, asserting that “targeting Anthropic may garner attention, but ultimately, it is everyone who suffers.”
Shanahan noted that Claude is already deployed across various government sectors, including classified environments, and he deemed Anthropic’s conditions as “reasonable.”
He cautioned that the large language models underpinning chatbots like Claude remain “unprepared for critical applications in national security,” especially when it comes to fully autonomous weaponry.
“They aren’t attempting to be coy here,” he remarked on LinkedIn.
