Cybersecurity and AI Merit Badges Introduced by Scouting America
In a significant advancement towards digital literacy, Scouting America has unveiled new merit badges focused on cybersecurity and artificial intelligence this year.
These initiatives underscore the increasing necessity to safeguard digital devices and sensitive information from malicious entities.
Brig. Gen. Robert K. Bogart, commander of the human performance wing at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, emphasized the burgeoning demand in the cybersecurity sector.
“The imperative for virtual security has created a burgeoning career landscape,” he noted, underlining the vital role of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) in this evolution.
“STEM is foundational for our progress,” Bogart stated. “We rely on individuals equipped with STEM degrees to propel scientific innovation forward. It is this exceptional cadre of experts, imbued with vigor and creativity, that drives our inventions and scientific advancements.”
Among the innovations emerging from his wing is a portable device capable of monitoring vital signs and maintaining crucial medical histories, ensuring that individuals receive precise care throughout various contexts—from the battlefield to hospitals, as remarked by Bogart. “These instruments are instrumental for our operations,” he added.
Cybersecurity’s personal relevance was further articulated by Michael Dunn, an Air Force officer involved in creating the new cybersecurity badge with Scouting America. “Our digital existence permeates every facet of daily life,” Dunn asserted.
Scout programs traditionally instruct youth on safety in nature; however, Dunn noted that the new curriculum prioritizes secure online conduct.
“As they navigate digital landscapes—social media and beyond—it is essential for them to protect their personal safety as well as their data.
Secure practices are imperative not just for them, but to shield their families, educational institutions, and eventually, their professional engagements,” he elucidated.
During the event, hundreds of local scouts from the Tecumseh and Miami Valley Councils participated in workshops emphasizing digital safety. Topics covered included WiFi security, computer viruses, cyberbullying, digital extortion, and encryption, among others.
Tecumseh Council CEO Robert Lavoie posited that the recent event was likely the largest launch in the nation for this new paradigm of merit badges.
“This is a crucial educational initiative for our youth,” Lavoie remarked, reflecting on the Scouts’ mission of fostering safety and awareness. “This marks the next frontier in that endeavor.”
Many scouts expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity to explore their devices and even traveled from other states, including Michigan, to attend the workshops. “It’s an exciting experience,” several commented to a Dayton Daily News reporter.
James Walden, Director of the Center for Cybersecurity at Miami University, who spoke at the event, highlighted the center’s commitment to experiential learning designed to inspire the younger generation.
“Events like these reinforce our optimism for the future—young people who are inquisitive, driven, and ready to confront the challenges that our cybersecurity landscape presents,” he concluded.
