In recent years, numerous companies have seized the opportunity to introduce unsolicited features into services utilized by the public, with a pronounced inclination towards artificial intelligence (AI) functionalities that often go unrequested.

This trend is not necessarily detrimental. Occasionally, these technological innovations include truly groundbreaking and beneficial features.

However, many users find themselves yearning for the simplicity and familiarity of services as they existed prior, such as a trusted search engine prior to the advent of Google’s AI-generated summaries that dominate every query.

Fortunately, astute internet users have discovered effective workarounds (which we have verified) to mitigate the unwanted influence of AI on search results. Here’s how to bypass these overviews:

The On-The-Spot Method

One effective method to minimize AI results—though not entirely eliminate them from your searches—is by appending “-AI” or “-ai” at the end of your query.

This technique aligns with other strategies to refine search outcomes (for example, enclosing specific phrases in quotation marks). It offers a straightforward means to exclude AI overview results without necessitating significant changes or permanency.

For instance, if you’re on the lookout for information pertaining to norovirus, you might search “norovirus symptoms -ai” to attain results devoid of the overview.

The Backend Opt-Out Method

Another strategy for Chrome users, highlighted by Yunaluvgames on Instagram last month and Android Authority late last year, allows users to more effectively eliminate overviews from their regular searches, ensuring AI summaries only appear when desired.

To initiate this, navigate to your Chrome browser’s Settings, and select “Search Engine” or enter chrome://settings/searchEngines in the search bar.

Select “Manage Search Engines and Site Search” and click “Add” under Site Search.

Input the following details into the new fields:

  • Name: AI Free Web
  • Shortcut: @web
  • URL with %s in place of query: {google:baseURL}search?q=%s&udm=14

By adding this “AI Free Web” option to your search engine settings and designating it as the default, you can restore your former search engine functionalities.

You will now find AI Free Web listed among your search engines; clicking the three dots to its right will provide the option to “Make Default.”

This same configuration can be replicated in Firefox by inputting the same information within the Preferences section under Search.

Once complete, your search results should now effectively filter out undesired AI results. Regrettably, straightforward workarounds for mobile platforms remain scarce.

Reasons to Eschew AI Overview Results

By now, many individuals have formed their own perspectives regarding AI-generated overviews—some users find them advantageous for swift, concise responses to trivial inquiries, such as “who is that one blonde guy from ‘Buffy’?” while others express frustration over questionable sourcing and inaccuracies.

“These AI-generated summaries frequently lack reliability and may exhibit overt inaccuracies or misleading data,” noted Andrey Meshkov, co-founder and chief technology officer of AdGuard, a company dedicated to privacy and ad-blocking solutions, in a prior commentary to HuffPost.

Additionally, misleading answers from AI can yield perilous consequences: “For instance, when seeking medical advice, AI might suggest dangerous actions, such as the notorious case of an AI Overview recommending drinking urine to combat kidney stones,” Meshkov remarked.

Yvette Schmitter, CEO and managing partner at Fusion Collective, has previously expressed concerns regarding the “opaque” nature of these services—much remains shrouded in uncertainty as to how information is prioritized or sourced.

This engenders a myriad of inquiries from both experts and users alike, Schmitter emphasized: “What occurs when the AI summary, which may or may not correlate with sponsored search results, diverges from the information presented in the search queries?

Why are there discrepancies? What constitutes accuracy? Since these tools operate entirely opaquely, discerning value within the AI ‘feature’ becomes nearly impossible.”

If you find yourself less than enamored with the present AI Overviews and long for the more straightforward processes of the pre-AI Google era, these methods may indeed be advantageous.
