Imagine collaborating with your closest friends, venturing into the uncertain realm of entrepreneurship, and ultimately reaping the rewards of your labor as millionaires. Such was the remarkable trajectory of Piotr, Szymon, and Michal, three enterprising young men from Poland who launched their e-commerce venture amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Their initial offering? Customized mugs.
Yet this was merely the inception, as they promptly broadened their product range to encompass t-shirts, pillows, and bags. Astonishingly, within a mere three months, they began recording substantial profits, which they chose to reinvest into the expansion of their company, Tortli.
Encouraged by their early success, they sought to penetrate markets beyond Poland’s borders. However, this endeavor proved to be fraught with challenges.
Following some initial setbacks in Germany, they strategically recalibrated their approach, redirecting their efforts towards emerging markets in the Czech Republic, Romania, and Hungary.
Tortli
Much like the legendary Bill Gates with Microsoft, Tortli is a Polish-origin enterprise borne from the collaboration of three dynamic individuals. Their journey commenced in a humble garage belonging to their sisters-in-law. In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021, Piotr, Szymon, and Michał united to realize a business concept.
The conditions appeared auspicious: all three possessed e-commerce experience, competition was minimal, and production costs were favorably low. What could possibly go awry? In actuality, nothing, for within months, these thirty-somethings ascended to millionaire status.
Thus, Tortli came into existence as an e-commerce entity dedicated to mug customization. As Piotr Szyska recounted to the Polish news outlet Onet, We commenced with the mugs. For about two to three months, we created our products in the garage.
Eventually, we transitioned to a dedicated production facility, where we continue our operations today. Now, it generates millions in revenue, encompassing not only custom mugs but also t-shirts, pillows, and bags.
From Garage Start-Up to Millionaire Status
The financial benefits accrued in their initial months were nothing short of astounding. They achieved daily sales approximating 100,000 zlotys (around 23,000 USD), a figure that certainly sparked conversations among peers. However, the trio maintained a unified vision for their enterprise, rendering profits a non-issue.
Szyszka elaborated, “We never viewed ourselves as millionaires. Despite the funds appearing in our accounts, they were earmarked for reinvestment. Given the meteoric rise in sales, it became imperative to acquire additional machinery, enhance production capabilities, grow our team, and expand our warehouse.”
Crossing Borders
With success as their impetus, what impediment hindered their aspirations to extend their reach and introduce their products to international markets? None, thus they embraced the challenge. With an expanding catalog featuring customization options for mugs, t-shirts, pillows, and bags, they ventured into nations such as Germany.

However, the Bavarian market demonstrated a markedly different temperament than that of Poland, leading to some financial setbacks. We incurred losses and encountered obstacles.
In Germany, our offerings could not mirror those in Poland; the market demographics are more nuanced. Our product lineup required adaptation to cater to these new audiences, Szyska clarified.
Nevertheless, Tortli continues to thrive vigorously in countries like Romania, Hungary, and the Czech Republic. The harmonious blend of knowledge, experience, judicious product selection, timely decision-making, and, perhaps, a touch of serendipity has catalyzed the success story of these three ambitious young men.
