COLUMBIA: Celebration for Local Entrepreneurial Achievement
On Saturday, The Shops on Sharp End entrepreneurship initiative, situated in downtown Columbia, commemorated the graduation of Steep & Bloom, coinciding with the small business’s expansion to a new locale.
The Shops on Sharp End operate as a retail incubator nestled within the vibrant heart of the black business district on Fifth Street. This collaborative venue empowers local start-ups to showcase their products, engage with the community, and host events.
Tiowana Warrick, the program manager for Sharp End, recounts her joining the initiative in 2024, drawn by its deep-rooted history and a steadfast commitment to nurturing small minority and underserved communities.
“During the 1940s and 1950s, opportunities for the black community to shop throughout Columbia were limited. As a result, individuals within the community resolved to establish their own businesses, creating spaces for their people,” Warrick elaborated.
Having established itself on Sharp End since December 2024, Steep & Bloom has experienced substantial growth over the past two years, necessitating a move to a larger space at Serendipity Gallery on East Walnut Street.
Christa Holtzclaw, the proprietor of Steep & Bloom, expressed her gratitude for the chance to offer her clientele a brick-and-mortar shopping experience, a shift from her previous online-only sales model.
“This area boasts a rich historical significance, embodying the legacy of the Black business district. It is imperative for us to acknowledge this history; forgetting it would be a disservice to our community,” Holtzclaw stated.
Steep & Bloom Tea specializes in artisan loose-leaf teas, herbal mixtures, tea-related accessories, and distinctive mushroom and matcha offerings.
Holtzclaw curates a collection composed of whole ingredients derived from an assortment of over 70 botanicals, herbs, and spices, all free from artificial flavorings.
Participants in the entrepreneurship program collaborate with established partners, including The District, Downtown CID, Central Missouri Community Action, and Regional Economic Development, to acquire vital skills and strategies aimed at business development.
“Our coaches equip them with a suite of resources and tools to facilitate business initiation,” Warrick explained.
“This includes guidance on available scholarships, securing business licenses, and generating innovative growth strategies.”
As Columbia celebrates the centennial of Black History Month, Warrick expressed her pride in contributing to an establishment steeped in historical legacy, furthering its mission of community engagement.
One of my proudest accomplishments is the increased visibility the shops at Sharp End have gained since my arrival in June 2024.
My outreach efforts have engaged the community, raising awareness about local Black businesses, and encouraging more events at our facility, Warrick commented.
Steep & Bloom stands as one of 11 active retailers within The Shops at Sharp End.
Although Black History Month draws to a close, Warrick remains unwaveringly committed to discovering new business ventures and facilitating avenues for small business proprietors to flourish at The Shops on Sharp End.
