Trump Approves Nvidia Chip Exports to China
On December 8, President Donald Trump announced a pivotal decision allowing U.S. semiconductor behemoth Nvidia to export its cutting-edge H200 artificial intelligence chips to “approved customers” in China and additional countries.
This policy shift follows a recent meeting between Trump and Nvidia’s CEO, Jensen Huang, highlighting a more accommodating stance on tech exports.
In a post shared on his Truth Social platform, Trump stated, “I have informed President Xi of China that the United States will permit NVIDIA to ship its H200 products to approved customers, ensuring robust National Security remains intact.” He claimed that President Xi had reacted favorably to this initiative.
Trump also articulated that a 25% tariff would be imposed on sales, emphasizing that this policy is designed to bolster American employment, invigorate domestic manufacturing, and ultimately benefit American taxpayers.
This announcement signifies a notable reorientation in U.S. policy regarding advanced AI chip exports. The previous administration, under President Joe Biden, had imposed stringent restrictions on such exports to China due to apprehensions surrounding national security and potential military applications.
Critiquing the prior administration, Trump asserted, “The Biden Administration compelled our esteemed companies to invest BILLIONS OF DOLLARS in creating ‘degraded’ products that had minimal market demand—an ill-conceived approach that stunted Innovation and disadvantaged American workers. That chapter is CLOSED!”
He further noted that the Department of Commerce is in the process of finalizing the specifics of this initiative, which will also extend to other U.S. technology giants such as AMD and Intel.

Nvidia’s Response
In response to Trump’s announcement, an Nvidia representative expressed approval, stating, “We commend President Trump’s decision to enable America’s semiconductor sector to compete effectively, which will bolster high-paying jobs and manufacturing within the United States.”
“Facilitating H200 access to approved commercial clients, thoroughly vetted by the Department of Commerce, exemplifies a judicious equilibrium that greatly benefits America,” the spokesperson added.
