Samsung has significantly advanced its foldable display technology for smartphones. In the early iterations of its Galaxy Z series, the company initially employed colorless polyimide (CPI) but has since shifted to ultra-thin glass (UTG) in its latest models.
In comparison to CPI, UTG presents a flatter and more seamless surface, diminishes the visibility of creases, and enhances overall durability.
Nonetheless, this innovation still falls short of replicating the experience offered by traditional smartphone displays.
The creasing persists under certain lighting conditions, and the surface characteristics remain inferior to conventional cover glass, thereby undermining both its premium aesthetic and resilience. In response to these limitations, Samsung Display seems poised to embark on a solution.
Recently, on X, noted informant Ice Universe revealed that Samsung Display is innovating a new varietal of foldable display technology referred to as center-etched thin glass (CTG).
How CTG Could Enhance Foldable Displays
Current UTG technology features a uniformly thick glass sheet. However, foldable displays necessitate variable specifications across different areas.
Most of the display calls for a robust, thicker layer that provides a flat, glass-like finish while maintaining high durability.
Conversely, the folding segments require enhanced flexibility. The uniform thickness of UTG forces Samsung to negotiate a compromise between strength and pliability.
Consequently, neither aspect reaches its full potential. The rigid sections cannot achieve the optimal strength, while the folding segments invariably possess a thickness that accentuates the crease and increases strain on the glass over time, potentially inciting microcracking.
CTG aspires to rectify these constraints by allowing the various sections of the glass sheet to possess distinct thicknesses and physical attributes.
Non-foldable areas may remain thicker to maximize integrity, enhance durability, and achieve an even flatter, smoother glass surface. In contrast, the folding areas can be rendered thinner to boost flexibility.
Hypothetically, this methodology would enable Samsung to merge the best of both worlds: a stronger, smoother display with diminished crease visibility while alleviating stress on the folding area to augment long-term durability.
Don’t Anticipate CTG in Galaxy Z Phones Anytime Soon
However, the development of CTG is far from simplistic, particularly at the scale necessary for mass production. Fabricating a single glass sheet with variable thicknesses and material properties poses a formidable engineering challenge.
Should this endeavor falter, it could lead to inconsistent surface textures, irregular reflections, and optical anomalies.
If Samsung Display navigates these challenges successfully, CTG could herald a groundbreaking evolution in foldable display technology.

At present, no announcements have been made concerning the anticipated debut of CTG or its integration into Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy Z series.
Since the technology is reportedly still in the nascent stages of development, its introduction with the Galaxy Z Fold 9 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold 9, Galaxy Z Flip 9, or Galaxy Z TriFold 2 seems highly improbable.
