Survey Reveals Key Smartphone Preferences Among European Consumers
JAKARTA – A recent survey conducted by Samsung, which encompassed 5,001 adults spanning five European nations, reveals that battery longevity stands out as a pivotal criterion for consumers when selecting their next smartphone.
Notably, 36% of participants identified battery performance as paramount, with additional considerations including multitasking capabilities, screen dimensions, device performance, and privacy concerns.
The comprehensive study involved individuals aged 18 and above from France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom, with findings officially released on Samsung’s website on October 14, 2026.
A significant 66% of respondents reported that their current smartphone selection was influenced by at least one personal interest they aim to cultivate, encompassing areas such as entertainment, side projects, gaming, travel, and content creation.
Approximately 46% of participants indicated that personal aspirations play a crucial role in shaping their technology choices, whereas 24% stated that their selections are primarily motivated by the lifestyle they envision.
Beyond functionality and performance, individual style also figures prominently in decision-making; 28% of respondents expressed that their current smartphone serves as an extension of their personal aesthetic.
Battery Life and Multitasking: Primary Concerns
The survey underscores that battery performance is the foremost concern for prospective smartphone buyers, with 36% of participants expressing frustration over frequent charging needs.
Moreover, the necessity for efficient multitasking emerged as a common issue; 18% of respondents conveyed annoyance at the need to incessantly switch between applications to accomplish tasks instead of being able to utilize multiple applications concurrently.
Screen size, too, plays a significant role in user satisfaction. Fourteen percent of participants remarked that their devices’ displays were insufficiently large for various activities, including work tasks and gaming during travel.
Furthermore, 13% indicated a desire to transition to devices equipped with larger screens to effectively continue tasks initiated on their mobile phones.
The findings illuminate a consumer desire for devices that facilitate a multitude of tasks without necessitating the switch to larger-screen devices.
Concerns About Privacy and Performance
Privacy considerations are also paramount in smartphone selection. Approximately 27% of respondents admitted to halting or avoiding online banking or mobile transactions in public due to concerns about onlookers potentially viewing their screens.
This apprehension highlights that safeguarding sensitive information displayed on screens is a critical aspect of the user experience, particularly when engaging in financial activities in public environments.
In terms of performance, 22% of respondents prioritized it as a consideration for their next smartphone acquisition.
Additionally, 20% expressed a desire to engage in more activities without the necessity of upgrading to a larger-screened device.
Device design is another significant factor; 15% of respondents expressed a preference for thinner, more portable smartphones.
Notably, interest in alternative device formats is pronounced among younger demographics, with 21% of individuals aged 25-34 indicating a willingness to contemplate smartphones that could unfold into tablet-like devices.
Samsung interprets these findings as indicative of consumer demands for technology that seamlessly integrates into daily life, enhancing the ability to perform tasks deemed essential.

In conclusion, Samsung asserts that the survey reflects a universal yearning for “technology that operates proficiently within everyday contexts, facilitating individuals in achieving their pivotal objectives.”
