Reddit Surpasses TikTok as the Fourth Most Visited Social Media Platform in the UK

Recent data from Ofcom reveals that Reddit has ascended past TikTok, securing its position as the fourth most frequented social media platform in the United Kingdom.

This remarkable surge can largely be attributed to modifications in search engine algorithms, alongside evolving online behaviors among Generation Z users.

Currently, Reddit engages approximately 60% of UK internet users, rising from a mere 33% in 2023. A comprehensive report correlates this significant uptick with enhancements in Google’s search framework, which increasingly favors valuable content sourced from online discussion forums.

Google and Reddit Partnership

A pivotal aspect of this growth trajectory is Reddit’s collaborative engagement with Google. The tech titan utilizes Reddit’s data to refine its artificial intelligence (AI) models, with Reddit emerging as the most frequently referenced source within Google’s AI-compiled search summaries. Consequently, this partnership has catalyzed a substantial influx of traffic directed toward Reddit forums.

Moreover, Reddit maintains a similar alliance with OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, further ensuring that Reddit’s content remains prominent in online searches.

The Gen Z Effect

Reddit’s meteoric rise is also a reflection of shifting online habits, especially among younger users seeking authentic human perspectives rather than polished content.

This trend is particularly pronounced among individuals aged 18 to 24, over three-quarters of whom now actively engage with the platform.

Reddit has ascended to become the sixth most visited entity for UK users within this demographic, climbing from the tenth position a year earlier. Notably, more than 75% of individuals in this age bracket now utilize the platform.

Within the UK, female users constitute over half of Reddit’s audience. Data indicates that 71% of women on Reddit harbor a personal interest in skincare, beauty, and cosmetics, resulting in heightened activity on UK-centric subreddits centered around these themes.

Additionally, subreddits focused on pregnancy and parenting have experienced a 100% increase in size over the past year.

Reddit’s Evolving Image

In comments to The Guardian, Reddit’s Chief Operating Officer, Jen Wong, highlighted the platform’s diversification.

Initially perceived as predominantly male-oriented—centered on gaming and technology—Reddit has transformed into a gender-diverse community within the UK. Notably, one in three users belongs to Gen Z women.

Younger demographics are increasingly leveraging Reddit for guidance during crucial life transitions. “Gen Z are very open to seeking advice online about various life stages,” Wong stated.

“This includes navigating milestones such as moving out and renting for the first time—tasks that often occur later for some in this generation. Reddit provides a secure environment for inquiries about practical matters like budgeting or planning a wedding.”

Reddit vs AI Content

Wong elaborated on Reddit’s objective of encouraging users to access the platform directly, rather than through search engine results.

She positions Reddit as an alternative to AI-generated responses, stating, “Unlike AI-generated content, which often lacks depth and coherence, Reddit provides an authentic and varied assortment of advice. It offers a plethora of insights that may be imperfect or disorganized, but that’s precisely its value.”

Engagement with Sports and Live Discussions

Additionally, Reddit is becoming increasingly popular among sports enthusiasts. Many supporters of Premier League teams actively engage with their team’s subreddit while watching live matches.

According to company analytics, the Premier League subreddit has recorded over a billion extra views in the last year.

The platform is also emerging as a critical venue for discussions surrounding women’s football, which frequently receives insufficient media exposure compared to the men’s game.

In the past year, views of subreddits dedicated to women’s teams, including Arsenal Women and the England Lionesses, have doubled.
