Philippine National Bank Optimizes Core Banking Operations with IBM Collaboration
Philippine National Bank (PNB) has achieved a remarkable reduction of nearly 75% in its core banking batch processing time through a comprehensive modernization of its banking infrastructure, executed in partnership with technology leader IBM and consulting firm CROZ.
Over the span of two years, this modernization initiative facilitated a transition from the outdated IBM z/VSE system on the z14 architecture to the advanced IBM z/OS platform operating on the cutting-edge IBM z16.
Simultaneously, the implementation of the IBM Resource Access Control Facility (RACF) significantly bolstered security measures and enhanced the resilience of the system.
“Ensuring the reliability and resiliency of the bank’s operations is central to PNB’s commitment to enhancing the customer experience,” stated Constantino Yap, Senior Vice President and Group Head of Digital Channel Management and Innovation at PNB. This commitment aligns with evolving market expectations and stringent regulatory mandates.
The initiative was orchestrated by IBM Expert Labs in collaboration with CROZ, an esteemed IBM Business Partner, alongside PNB’s internal technology teams.
As financial institutions grapple with mounting pressure to deliver secure and dependable digital services while adhering to increasingly rigorous regulations set forth by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), the need for robust core banking systems has never been more critical.
These systems are integral to managing essential functions, including deposits, payments, and transaction processing, thereby necessitating optimal uptime and stability.
PNB reported that the upgrade effectively eradicated production slowdowns that previously transpired bi-monthly.
Furthermore, the time required for nightly end-of-day pre-processing validation has been slashed from five hours to just two.
Batch processing duration plummeted from 13 hours down to a mere three, thereby expediting business operations and diminishing the necessity for overnight monitoring and IT troubleshooting efforts.
“Financial institutions across the Philippines face an urgent need to modernize mission-critical infrastructure while ensuring the stability and security their customers expect,” remarked Leo Capinpin, Country General Manager and Technology Leader at IBM Philippines.
He emphasized that this collaboration with PNB and CROZ showcases IBM’s commitment to bolstering operational resilience and paving the way for future innovations in the banking sector.
To mitigate operational risks and avert disruptions in banking services, PNB implemented the project in carefully planned phases.
This initiative also encompassed knowledge transfer and technical training to empower PNB’s teams to independently manage and further refine the newly established environment.

“In addition to modernizing PNB’s core infrastructure, the IBM-CROZ team imparted invaluable z/OS expertise and supported our z/VSE mainframe technical personnel,” commented Michael Morallos, FSVP and Group Head for Information Technology at PNB, along with Cesar Buhay, Project Director at PNB.
