The competition in artificial intelligence (AI) has transcended mere handy assistants and chatbots that respond to user queries with unwavering obedience.

This metamorphosis has seen conversational chatbots evolve into multifaceted AI agents capable of navigating complex enterprise workflows.

Consequently, the focal point has shifted towards enhancing productivity. This strategic pivot explains why prominent tech firms and AI enterprises are now prioritizing the provision of a cohesive experience through a single interface.

OpenAI unveiled the GPT-5.6 model family on July 9, comprising three distinct models: Sol, Terra, and Luna. Each model is customized to cater to different operational needs, furnishing varying levels of performance, speed, and cost-efficiency.

This launch coincided with the debut of ChatGPT Work, an AI agent conceived to undertake comprehensive tasks rather than merely respond to inquiries.

ChatGPT Work is fundamentally built upon the GPT-5.6 framework. During this event, indianexpress.com was granted an exclusive glimpse into these innovative models, expertly demonstrated by Gabriel Chua, Developer Experience Engineer at OpenAI.

ChatGPT Work integrates Codex, OpenAI’s AI software engineering agent, into its primary interface. OpenAI reports that approximately 20% of Codex users are knowledge workers, reflecting a surging demand for agentic AI capabilities.

Given this escalating requirement, Codex is not only embedded within the developer toolkit but also plays a crucial role in the Work mode of ChatGPT.

The desktop interface distinctly features a regular chat mode on the left, with Work and Codex modes now allowing users to manipulate outputs using spreadsheets, interactive dashboards, and complete web pages.

The latest update further enables users to switch seamlessly between Chat and Work modes, a functionality also available on mobile devices.

Productivity Needs On-the-Go

ChatGPT Work ushers in a new era where users can fulfill their productivity requirements anytime, anywhere.

OpenAI is adeptly leveraging this accessibility to curate a unified experience, encapsulating various tasks under one comprehensive platform, an initiative that has historically been envisioned as a ‘super app.’

This cohesive interface empowers users to effortlessly connect with familiar tools such as Slack, Google Workspace, and Microsoft 365, all pivotal in their daily operations.

Amidst mounting competition from industry counterparts, OpenAI aims to mold ChatGPT into a singular destination, with the newly introduced model family and ChatGPT Work representing significant strides toward this goal.

The company heralds this development as a pivotal moment, marking the first instance in which a billion individuals possess agentic AI at their fingertips.

During the demonstration, Chua illustrated three practical applications—utilizing ChatGPT as a chief of staff to help users manage tasks across multiple communication platforms, conducting post-event market analyses, and providing recaps for recently organized events.

In the initial example, ChatGPT was tasked with scanning Gmail, Slack messages, and Google Calendar, summarizing essential tasks for the day, and setting up automated daily reminders for teammates.

“With access to diverse tools, the chat feature can act on your behalf by reading, synthesizing, and fundamentally assisting you in accomplishing your goals,” Chua expressed, highlighting how the tool collated information from scattered resources into a cohesive plan.

In the second showcase, Chua demonstrated ChatGPT Work’s capability to amalgamate event photographs, engagement metrics stored in a spreadsheet, and personal notes from Apple Notes to craft both a LinkedIn post and an internal summary website, all without intricate instructions on formatting.

“The chat interface generated this from scratch autonomously. It assimilated my notes about impressive photos and memorable moments from the event seamlessly,” he elaborated.

In the third demonstration, the tool reconciled discrepancies found across a spreadsheet, emails, and Slack messages emanating from a multi-city hackathon.

It results in the generation of a spreadsheet, a presentation deck, and an internal dashboard. OpenAI asserts that its latest model family is notably more cost-effective and efficient than its predecessors, deeming this a critical factor for customers alongside raw performance.

When questioned about how OpenAI’s methodology distinguishes itself from competitors like Google, Microsoft, Anthropic, and Alibaba, all of which are developing their own AI agents, the focus shifted to the cost per completed task rather than output quantity.

OpenAI additionally claimed that its models are now surpassing the capabilities of the rival Claude Fable 5 while utilizing fewer computational resources, although this assertion awaits independent verification.

Data Privacy and Personalization

The shift towards a unified ChatGPT experience necessitates augmented access to personal and workplace data.

When inquired about OpenAI’s strategy for balancing personalization and privacy—specifically concerning data storage, utilization for model improvement, and user control—Chua underscored, “To clarify, we do not utilize user data for training purposes.”

“Personalization is achieved through the model’s memory capability, enhancing its contextual understanding over time. Referring back to an earlier example—if I instruct ChatGPT to review my Slack, Gmail, and calendar—it initially requires thorough details about each system.

Over time, it discerns the relevant systems for me, reducing the need for repeated explanations. It’s akin to onboarding a new team member.” Chua further detailed the configurable nature of this memory and personalization function.

Users will have the autonomy to determine what is remembered and what is not, with OpenAI committed to continuous improvement on this front.

“We prioritize the privacy of our nearly one billion users, particularly enterprises inputting sensitive data into ChatGPT. Our first-party plugins are meticulously designed to manage this securely,” Chua asserted.

OpenAI’s integration of Codex into ChatGPT is currently ongoing, with the company indicating that further enhancements regarding usage limitations and controls are still in development.
