In a recent address at the BlackRock US Infrastructure Summit in Washington, D.C., OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, articulated concerns regarding the escalating criticism faced by artificial intelligence in the United States.
Altman underscored the evolving narrative surrounding the AI industry and cautioned tech companies about the implications of this shifting perception.
“AI is not very popular in the U.S. right now,” remarked Altman during his keynote, as reported by Business Insider.

He stressed that the speed at which businesses, researchers, and government entities embrace AI is paramount.
He asserted that a swift response could bestow the United States with an unparalleled opportunity to shape global technological and economic trajectories.
“I think this is a once in many generation opportunity to really improve the economy and rewrite some of the rules of society that aren’t working in light of this new incredible wealth fountain we have,” Altman declared.
Recent polling corroborates Altman’s apprehensions regarding the challenges AI faces. An NBC News poll revealed that 57% of voters perceive the risks associated with AI as eclipsing its advantages.
Furthermore, public sentiment towards AI appears less favorable than towards various political figures, including Donald Trump and Kamala Harris.
Notably, a Pew Research Center survey indicated that 50% of American adults now feel “more concerned than excited” about the increasing implementation of AI, marking a 13% rise since 2021.
OpenAI has also endured scrutiny following a recent agreement with the U.S. Department of Defense, which occurred subsequent to the Pentagon’s decision to exclude rival AI firm Anthropic.
In his discussions, Altman referenced these tensions while addressing the topic of “relative power.”
