These advancements are expected to incorporate sophisticated packaging technologies such as SoIC-MH and Wafer-Level Multi-Chip Module (WMCM), offering a myriad of advantages.
Implications of the iPhone 18 Packaging on M6 Models
According to a report from Commercial Times, the entry-level M6 employs Apple’s SoIC-MH technology, the same foundational architecture unveiled with the M5 Pro and M5 Max, which Apple labels as Fusion Architecture.
The report additionally highlights Apple’s intensified focus on WMCM, slated for introduction with the A20 Pro, which will power the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the forthcoming iPhone Fold.
This strategic update underscores Apple’s commitment to transitioning from large, monolithic dies towards a more modular configuration.
This innovative shift is poised to not only reduce manufacturing expenses but also enhance yield rates and overall power efficiency.
The WMCM technology, integrating SoIC-MH to augment interconnect density, promises the synthesis of logic chips, LPDDR memory, and high-speed input/output capabilities.
Apple’s ambitious roadmap is being propelled by its foundry collaborator TSMC, which is augmenting capacity across its domestic production facilities.
Recent forecasts suggest that TSMC’s monthly WMCM capacity could reach 60,000 wafers by late 2026, with projections exceeding 120,000 wafers by 2027.
Despite the ongoing surge in demand driven by AI advancements, which has strained the supply chain, Apple’s position as the most lucrative non-AI customer continues to render it a significant beneficiary.
Notably, industry analyst Mark Gurman has previously conjectured that the M6 Pro and M6 Max may not come to fruition, as Apple appears poised to prioritize AI functionalities within the M7 series.
Reports indicate that the base SoC is anticipated to achieve a unified memory bandwidth of 240GB/s—an impressive 56 percent increase over the M5’s bandwidth—with a launch projected in the first half of 2026.

Furthermore, Gurman has divulged that Apple is simultaneously working on the M8, suggesting that any packaging innovations initially earmarked for the M6 Pro and M6 Max will likely be deferred to the M7 Pro and M7 Max.
