Launch of Start Safe, Stay Safe App in York and North Yorkshire
The newly introduced Start Safe, Stay Safe app, an initiative by Stop Hate UK and funded by the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority, aims to provide a robust platform for residents in York and North Yorkshire to report instances of street harassment while accessing much-needed support.
This application facilitates a discreet mechanism for users to document occurrences of harassment, Hate Crimes, or Hate Incidents in public arenas. It is accessible to anyone who either experiences or witnesses such misconduct.
Jo Coles, the deputy mayor for policing, fire, and crime in the region, stated, Street-based harassment has no place in our community. The Mayor and I are resolved to ensure that everyone feels secure in our area. However, we recognize that for women and girls specifically, urban environments often feel perilous, with numerous incidents remaining unreported.
This app will empower law enforcement and support services by providing tangible evidence, enhancing their capacity to address violence against women and girls.
Users of the app can report occurrences anonymously, document audio, video, or photographic evidence, and connect with specialized support services. Additionally, they have the option to file a formal report to the police or local authorities.
A direct link to the Stop Hate UK 24/7 helpline is also integrated into the app, offering further assistance and guidance.
Rose Simkins, the chief executive of Stop Hate UK, remarked, Hate Crimes of all forms are grossly under-reported, as many individuals and entire communities hesitate to engage with police or local councils.
This award-winning application provides a secure and independent avenue for those who encounter or witness harassment, Hate Crimes, or Hate Incidents to seek counsel, support, and consider their subsequent steps.
The app receives endorsement from various entities, including the City of York Council, North Yorkshire Council, North Yorkshire Police, and Leaders Unlocked.
Councillor Michael Pavlovic, the executive member for safer communities at the City of York Council, commented, This user-friendly app simplifies and accelerates the reporting process for all types of street harassment. It not only protects women and girls but also supports anyone facing verbal abuse or hate-related harassment.
Detective Chief Superintendent Ian Scott from North Yorkshire Police added, It is crucial for individuals to feel secure throughout North Yorkshire, and the Start Safe, Stay Safe app will significantly bolster that sense of safety.
We will attentively consider all reports and, when necessary, take vigorous action to pursue any related offenses, striving for justice.
