Introduced worldwide on August 28, the Katana 15 HX C14 is powered by Intel’s prior-generation Core i9-14900HX processor and Nvidia’s RTX 5070 mobile GPU.
Noteworthy is the laptop’s embrace of memory configurability: consumers can opt for either dual DDR5 SO-DIMM slots or dual DDR4-3200 slots, marking a rare regression for a gaming device debuting in 2026.
This strategic shift is a response to the severe economic realities of a prevailing DRAM shortage. Presently, a 32GB DDR4-3200 SO-DIMM kit is priced at approximately $200, whereas an equivalent DDR5-6000 kit exceeds $400, as indicated by Tom’s Hardware.
Amid soaring memory prices, manufacturers face escalating affordability challenges in the entry-level gaming sector. MSI’s dual-memory framework offers budget-conscious consumers a means to circumvent the exorbitance of DDR5.
The driving force behind this approach is the Intel processor at the system’s core. The Core i9-14900HX, a robust 24-core, 32-thread Raptor Lake Refresh chip, natively accommodates both memory formats, enabling MSI to eschew redesigning the platform to include the DDR4 variant.

Since 48GB DDR4 SO-DIMM modules are currently nonexistent, achieving 96GB by populating two slots remains unfeasible.

Additional characteristics encompass Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.4, a 4-zone RGB keyboard featuring 1.7mm key travel, a 240W power adapter, USB Type-C with Power Delivery 3.0 capabilities, a 60Wh battery, and DTS-enhanced dual 2W speakers.
MSI has yet to reveal pricing or regional availability for the Katana 15 HX C14.

For gamers on a tight budget, the compromise is tangible. DDR4-3200, while offering lower bandwidth compared to contemporary DDR5 modules, may yield diminished performance in memory-intensive applications.
Nevertheless, for numerous titles at 1080p or 1440p resolutions, the practical repercussions are minor compared to the substantial monetary savings realized through opting for DDR4.
Intel’s sustained endorsement of DDR4 in its 14th-generation mobile processors has afforded laptop manufacturers an unexpected reprieve amid the shortage.
