On Wednesday, the company unveiled a beta version of Muse Code, powered by the Muse Spark 1.2 AI model, which is capable of executing intricate software engineering responsibilities including code generation and result validation.
Muse Code represents Meta’s strategic answer to the burgeoning popularity of tools such as Anthropic’s Claude Code and OpenAI’s Codex, which have become indispensable resources for developers.
Alexandr Wang, Meta’s AI chief, proclaimed in a recent post on X that Muse Code is positioned as “one of the most affordable coding agents available globally.”
The standard iteration of Muse Spark 1.2 is priced at $1.25 per million input tokens, 15 cents per million cached-input tokens, and $4.25 per million output tokens. Tokens refer to diminutive text or code fragments that AI models process.
A significantly discounted “contributor” tier specifies that user activity will be utilized to enhance Meta’s offerings. This may attract individual developers and startups, whereas enterprises managing proprietary coding might favor the standard tier.
However, making direct price comparisons proves challenging since Claude Code and Codex are integrated into subscription models.
Anthropic’s Pro Plan, at $20 per month, encompasses Claude Code, while Max plans range between $100 and $200 monthly.
In contrast, OpenAI’s Codex is accessible via the ChatGPT Plus plan, priced at $20 monthly, and its Pro plan costs $100.
This launch signifies the escalating significance of software coding as a crucial battleground in the AI landscape.
Unlike conventional chatbots, coding agents possess the ability to analyze a company’s software infrastructure, conduct testing, and generate code with minimal oversight.
Anthropic initially garnered momentum with Claude Code, while OpenAI expanded Codex’s reach across ChatGPT and developer platforms.
During Meta’s first-quarter earnings call in April, CEO Mark Zuckerberg emphasized that while developer tools were not the company’s primary focus, he remained open to offering coding solutions.
With the advent of Muse Code, Meta appears to be targeting programmers who may currently utilize Claude or Codex by proposing a competitive agent at a more accessible price point.
