  • Klarna’s Chief Executive stated that he employs AI coding tools to expedite prototype development and optimize staff efficiency.
  • The concept of vibe coding, which leverages AI for coding, is gaining momentum among technology leaders.
  • Last week, Klarna witnessed a remarkable 30% surge in its stock during its IPO, allowing employees the opportunity to trade shares early.

The CEO of this newly public enterprise is an ardent proponent of vibe coding.

During a recent episode of the Sourcery podcast, released on Saturday, Klarna’s CEO, Sebastian Siemiatkowski, elaborated on the efficiency gains facilitated by AI tools such as Cursor, which have enabled him to create prototypes expeditiously.

“I transitioned from being a business professional to exploring Cursor,” Siemiatkowski remarked, highlighting his non-technical past.

As the head of a prominent fintech company, he mentioned that although he has been vibe coding for two decades, the dynamics and pace of development have drastically evolved. Previously, he would relay instructions to engineers during meetings, only to await prototypes for weeks.

“Now, I sit with a computer and utilize AI to receive prototypes in merely 20 minutes,” he noted.

He explained that leveraging AI also significantly conserves his team’s time.

“Instead of interrupting my diligent engineers and product specialists with a mix of half-formed ideas, I can now experiment myself,” he stated. “I present them with a working model, asking, ‘What are your thoughts on this method? Can we enhance it further?”

The company has not yet responded to a request for comment from Business Insider.

Last week marked Klarna’s public debut on the New York Stock Exchange, two decades post-establishment. Its stock soared by 30% on launch day, climbing from its $40-per-share IPO price to $52 a share.

In an unusual decision, the company revealed plans to convert vested restricted stock units into tradable shares, which employees will be able to sell shortly after the $15 billion IPO. According to an email obtained by Business Insider, the converted shares will be “exempt from the six-month post-IPO lockup and can be traded during this period.”

Siemiatkowski represents a growing number of executives who are adopting vibe coding methodologies.

Vibe coding, a term coined by OpenAI cofounder Andrej Karpathy, has surged in popularity this year. Despite skepticism from some within the tech community regarding its shortsightedness and the perceived trivialization of complex tasks, vibe coding is already influencing how major tech firms and venture capitalists assess the value of software engineering proficiency.

Recently, Google CEO Sundar Pichai expressed delight in June about his own experience with vibe coding, while the same week, Business Insider reported Amazon’s discussions regarding formally adopting Cursor following employee interest in the tool.
