Apple to Invest $1 Billion Annually in Google’s Gemini AI Model
The technology behemoth, Apple, headquartered in California, is poised to allocate approximately $1 billion each year to procure access to a variant of Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence model, as disclosed in a recent Bloomberg report.
Google’s Gemini is a cutting-edge multimodal AI framework, adept at comprehending and generating text, images, audio, and code. Apple aims to implement a bespoke version of this AI system to augment its voice assistant, Siri, with a plethora of enhanced features and functionalities.
Notably, the Gemini model could concentrate on two pivotal functions: synthesizing information into succinct summaries and aiding users in organizing diverse activities, such as scheduling and task coordination.
Nonetheless, reports indicate that Google will not oversee all aspects of Siri’s capabilities; Apple will retain the use of its proprietary models for certain applications.
The enhancements derived from Gemini will be facilitated through Apple’s secure cloud computing infrastructure, specifically designed to manage sensitive AI operations.
The customized Gemini model is projected to incorporate an astonishing 1.2 trillion parameters. These numerical factors will be instrumental in equipping AI systems to produce astute responses.
To contextualize this, Apple’s existing cloud-driven intelligence system operates with just 150 billion parameters, rendering Google’s offering approximately eightfold more potent.
This considerable leap in computational prowess is expected to empower Siri, allowing it to tackle more intricate inquiries with heightened precision.
According to Bloomberg, prior to finalizing the agreement with Google, Apple explored collaborations with other AI enterprises, including OpenAI and Anthropic, to revamp its voice assistant.
Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, has assured investors that the improved Siri is slated for a spring launch, while also suggesting that the company remains receptive to additional third-party AI partnerships for its Apple Intelligence framework.
Despite this collaboration with Google, Apple is persistently advancing its in-house AI capabilities. With the eventual development of its proprietary AI technology, Apple may contemplate replacing Gemini entirely with a home-grown alternative.
