Apple’s iPhone Fold Anticipated Amid Repair Cost Concerns
Set for launch in September, Apple’s iPhone Fold is projected to retail for approximately $2,000 or more.
However, experts warn prospective buyers that the actual expenses may be significantly higher due to repair costs that often go unconsidered in the excitement of acquisition.

Ricky Panesar, founder of the repair service iCorrect.co.uk, projects that replacing the iPhone Fold’s internal foldable display may incur costs around £850 ($1155) or potentially even higher.
For comparison, Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 requires £594 to repair the same screen, benefiting from innovative Flex Titanium technology which minimizes screen creasing.
Prior to this, the repair for the Z Fold 7 was estimated at £569. Yet, Panesar surmises that repair expenses for the iPhone Fold could escalate even further.
According to Panesar, repair costs for Apple devices may dramatically outpace those seen previously. “We anticipate seeing the most exorbitant repair charges from Apple for any handheld device to date,” he stated.
“With the incorporation of technology from Samsung Display, we may face higher expenses compared to Samsung’s offerings, with repairs approaching the £850 benchmark.”
This expectation is grounded in the fact that Samsung uses its own display components, enhancing the availability and affordability of replacement parts.
In contrast, Apple’s utilization of Samsung Display panels alongside a proprietary 3D-printed hinge remains untested in both independent repair shops and among general users.
Such technology, when reflected upon current market trends in foldable devices, indicates an expensive burden for manufacturers resulting from intricate glass folding mechanisms and complex hinges.
Furthermore, independent repair specialists lack familiarity with Apple’s hinge, which will inevitably contribute additional learning expenses.
AppleCare+ Essential, Yet Costly for iPhone Fold
Panesar further advises consumers not to take for granted that AppleCare+ will deliver the same advantageous benefits as seen with prior iPhone models.
Traditionally, Apple has provided economical incident-based repairs—fees occasionally dipping to £29 ($29 in the U.S.) per incident. However, the iPhone Fold may deviate from this trend.
Additionally, the implications of Apple’s new leasing program, beginning at $17.99 monthly, resonate strongly in light of the anticipated pricing for the iPhone 18 and the projected repair expenses associated with the iPhone Fold.
Initial Launch Challenges for the iPhone Fold
Essentially, the iPhone Fold represents Apple’s inaugural foray into foldable technology. Despite the company’s reputation for rigorous product development, new complications are expected to surface.
The device will debut with iOS 27, marking the first implementation of foldable-specific software. A crucial distinction exists between software tailored for foldable devices and that which has undergone iterative refinement for such formats.
Samsung has been refining its foldable user interface since 2019, with early iterations often criticized for lacking fluidity.
In contrast, Apple embarks on this journey from scratch, inevitably leaving room for growth and enhancement in the near future.
Furthermore, the hinge on the iPhone Fold, still untested by millions, could present unexpected repair demands.
With the incorporation of a side-mounted Touch ID module, Panesar notes that “repairing a cracked Touch ID sensor will prove to be a complex endeavor” compared to the more straightforward Face ID repairs on conventional iPhones, particularly within the product’s initial years.
