The project, orchestrated by America250—a legislatively sanctioned entity dedicated to commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States—culminated in the official sealing and burial of this notable device in Independence National Historical Park, Philadelphia.
The time capsule is scheduled for reopening in 2276, coinciding with the half-millennial celebration of the nation’s founding.
This iPhone was meticulously selected through the “America Innovates” campaign, a program aimed at showcasing the pinnacle of technological advancements achieved by the United States by 2026.
Organizers contend that the device encapsulates significant strides in mobile computing, imaging technology, and connectivity—domains that have fundamentally transformed modern communication, professional engagement, and creative expression in the 21st century.
In a bid to offer future generations insight into daily life in 2026, the iPhone houses various digital artifacts, including notes preserved within the Notes app.
To ensure the integrity of these items over the course of two and a half centuries, the time capsule adheres to stringent preservation protocols.
This initiative has benefited from collaboration with experts from the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and conservation specialists from the Library of Congress.
The capsule’s core consists of a cylindrical stainless steel container, weighing approximately 417 kilograms, meticulously sealed with indium—a metal adept at filling minute gaps to thwart air and moisture intrusion.
Surrounding this core is an additional stainless steel shell, weighing around 500 kilograms, designed to mitigate environmental degradation during its subterranean confinement.
Beyond the iPhone, the “America’s Time Capsule” encompasses an array of artifacts representing all 50 states, five territories, and the Special Administrative Region of Columbia, along with contributions from the three branches of the federal government.
Among the noteworthy items included are a feather from the bald eagle “Old Abe,” a cherished mascot of the American Civil War, a fragment from the Wright brothers’ 1903 aircraft, and a prophetic message generated by Anthropic’s Claude AI model, envisioning California’s future over the next 250 years.
The overarching aim of this project is to safeguard quintessential representations of contemporary American society—from scientific and technological milestones to cultural narratives—ensuring that successive generations possess a comprehensive understanding of early 21st century America.
