Coding Will No Longer Be the Primary Role of Tech Professionals, Says Infosys Chairman Nandan Nilekani
Bengaluru, February 17 (SocialNews.XYZ) — Nandan Nilekani, Co-founder and Chairman of Infosys, articulated on Tuesday that the advent of artificial intelligence (AI) will profoundly transform the methodologies of software development and implementation. He asserted that programming will cease to be the focal responsibility of technology experts.
During the Infosys Investor Day, Nilekani characterized the shift to AI as a “root-and-branch” transformation.
This necessitates companies to reimagine customer experiences, business workflows, and organizational frameworks rather than simply layering on additional technology.
“Professionals must adapt to a reality where the primary objective is not merely writing code, but effectively harnessing AI,” he stated, noting that this shift will alter both job functions and operational models.
Nilekani emphasized that businesses will require enhanced competencies in fields such as AI engineering, orchestration of agents, and the management of non-deterministic systems, wherein a single input can yield diverse outcomes on each occasion.
He cautioned that firms will be compelled to confront long-standing issues like antiquated systems and technical liabilities, which inhibit their capacity to leverage AI optimally.
“The technology is significantly advanced compared to its actual deployment. While model efficiency is improving, the pace of implementation lags, as this is a complex endeavor.
It fundamentally revolves around organizational evolution, business restructuring, retraining personnel, and dissolving data silos,” Nilekani elaborated.
These observations are particularly relevant, given the recent turmoil in the technology sector, where a wave of panic selling led to a 5.51 percent decline in the Nifty IT index in a single day.
Investors expressed trepidation over AI-induced disruptions that threaten traditional services, which were once the backbone of substantial revenue for Indian IT enterprises.
The recent introduction of “Claude Cowork”—an innovative AI assistant by the US-based company Anthropic—has intensified anxieties among conventional IT service providers.
International brokerage Jefferies termed this product launch and the ensuing drop in NASDAQ as “SaaSpocalypse.”
Some analysts have cautioned that if agentic AI continues to displace traditional service models already struggling with margin compression, a revenue deflation of up to 40 percent could ensue.
