Expansion of Cybersecurity Programs at Utah Tech University

Utah Tech University is joining the ranks of Utah educational institutions that are broadening their cybersecurity curricula to address the rising global imperative for digital safety.

Located in St. George, this polytechnic institution has introduced a new Bachelor of Science degree in cybersecurity, alongside certificate programs in both cybersecurity and Cyber Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition.

These enhanced cyber offerings aim to equip more residents of Utah with the skills necessary for success in the burgeoning field of cybersecurity.

The career outlook for cybersecurity and information security analysts is especially promising, with an anticipated growth of 33% over the next decade, significantly outpacing the average growth rate for all occupations, as stated by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Furthermore, the remuneration in this sector is attractive. By 2024, the median annual salary for information security analysts is expected to reach nearly $125,000.

“As digital threats proliferate, so too does the necessity for adept responses and mitigation strategies. The demand for skilled cybersecurity professionals is far surpassing supply,” remarked Joe Francom, chair of the Computing Department, in a recent UT report.

“I am enthusiastic about providing students with a hands-on, applied approach to cybersecurity education, preparing them for robust careers in the workforce.”

In light of the escalating global requirement for cybersecurity specialists across both the private and public spheres, it is unsurprising that Utah’s public higher education institutions are earnestly working to fulfill these needs.

Various universities, such as Utah Valley University, Weber State University, Southern Utah University, Utah State University, Western Governors University, Salt Lake Community College, and the University of Utah, are now offering degrees or certificates in this expanding domain.

Cybersecurity — A Focus of ‘Talent Ready Utah’

Utah Tech’s Bachelor of Science in cybersecurity will incorporate new courses covering ethical hacking, cloud security, cyber law, and infrastructure defense, according to the university.

The program aims to enroll 35 students by its third year of operation.

Concurrently, the Cyber-SCADA certificate will specialize in safeguarding critical infrastructure such as power stations and water systems, which are increasingly susceptible to cyber threats.

This program will leverage industry insights, incorporating practical labs that utilize real-world SCADA technologies and tools.

As part of the Talent Ready Utah initiative, the state has allocated over $300,000 in funding to Utah Tech for these programs. This financial support will facilitate faculty recruitment, curriculum design, marketing efforts, and equipment acquisition necessary for launching these educational offerings.

“The rising demand for cybersecurity expertise renders programs like these indispensable,” stated Aaron Davis, dean of the College of Science, Engineering and Technology, in the UT announcement.

“We express our gratitude to Talent Ready Utah for supporting this impactful initiative, enabling us to equip students for essential, high-paying careers that protect vital infrastructure and communities.”

As part of this expansion, two new faculty members will join UT’s Computing Department.

Utah and the Intermountain West are swiftly emerging as hotspots for lucrative cybersecurity job opportunities, particularly in tech security firms such as Strider Technologies, based in South Jordan.

The Cyber-SCADA certificate and cybersecurity degree at UT will provide students with stackable credentials, career-oriented pathways, and access to internships and industry collaboration.

UVU’s Commitment Through the Center for National Security Studies

The dedication of Utah’s higher education system to cybersecurity education is exemplified by the Center for National Security Studies at Utah Valley University.

Established in 2016, the center has expanded to accommodate several hundred students, equipping them with hands-on technical training in vital areas such as national security, intelligence, and advanced platforms like artificial intelligence.

However, the center’s curriculum transcends information technology, also encompassing cyber ethics, historical context, civil liberties, and international law. Students are also trained in the critical importance of collaboration in national security.

Despite its relative youth, UVU’s Center for National Security Studies has ascended to prominence as one of the nation’s foremost national security programs, effectively launching graduates into a spectrum of high-demand careers in both the public and private sectors as well as academia.

Adapting to the ever-evolving landscape of cybersecurity, the center’s curriculum is continually updated to reflect real-time developments, ensuring the absence of obsolete textbooks among its resources.

The center’s challenge lies in transforming students from mere learners into proficient national security practitioners, while its burgeoning alumni network provides invaluable networking and mentorship opportunities.
