Who, Me? A Tale of IT Confusion
The professional landscape often presents challenges that can be both daunting and unappreciated. This column invites participants to recount their IT blunders and the cunning ways they navigated the aftermath.
This week, we encounter a contributor whom we shall refer to as “Neil,” who intriguingly maintained a website for a client we’ll term “Gerald.”
“Gerald would dispatch updates, I would implement them, and he would give his approval,” Neil recounted. “For years, our collaboration was seamless.”
However, the tranquility was shattered one day when Gerald erupted in fury. “The website is incorrect,” he declared. “Old content is everywhere!”
Neil promptly investigated the situation and found the site to be functioning without issue. All recent updates were indeed in place, and he reassured Gerald that everything was as it should be.
“Gerald expressed his feelings about my ‘perfect’ website,” Neil shared.
Upon further reflection, Neil deduced the root of the misunderstanding.
“During the migration of his website to a new server, Gerald had reviewed and approved it from the comfort of his home – as any normal person would – while I had left the old site operational on its previous server,” Neil explained.
He noted the pragmatic choice to preserve the old site; it incurred no additional costs and safeguarded historical data until absolute confirmation of its redundancy.
The revelation came to light when Neil discovered a pivotal oversight: Gerald’s IT support had hard-coded the old server’s IP address into the internal DNS of the office network.
“Consequently, for two years, all 40 employees accessed a website that was entirely stagnant,” Neil elaborated.
Incredibly, Gerald had never accessed the site from his office during those years. When visiting from home, he circumvented the internal DNS settings, leading him to the updated version. It was only upon finally checking in the office that he encountered the outdated website.
When I elucidated the situation to Gerald, his IT team was present,” Neil recalled. “There were two technicians.
They exchanged glances, possessing the silent camaraderie of those who have inadvertently compromised an expensive asset, and informed Gerald that my decision to maintain the old website was to blame for the confusion.
Neil acknowledged that their assertion was “technically accurate, akin to stating that ‘the floor was wet’ was an apt description of the Titanic’s plight.”

“Gerald stared at me,” Neil narrated. “Our eyes met, and there were two members of his IT team along with their lanyards standing beside him.”
“You should have deleted the old site,” Gerald stated emphatically.
And delete it, Neil eventually did. However, he waited another four months prior, just to err on the side of caution.
