IBM Expands Quantum Computing Initiatives with HRL Laboratories Acquisition
SAN FRANCISCO, July 23 (Reuters) – In a significant development within the quantum computing sphere, IBM has confirmed its acquisition of HRL Laboratories, a private research entity co-owned by Boeing Co and General Motors.
This strategic move, announced on Thursday, establishes a second cornerstone in IBM’s quantum computing ambitions.
IBM finds itself in a competitive landscape alongside tech giants such as Alphabet’s Google and Microsoft, all vying to engineer practical quantum machines capable of addressing complex problems—challenges that traditional computers would require millennia to resolve.
Earlier in May, the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump had pledged a substantial $1 billion investment to facilitate the establishment of a new enterprise named Anderon in New Albany, New York. This entity is intended to serve as a manufacturing hub for quantum computing chips designed for U.S. companies.
While there is a consensus across governmental and technological sectors that quantum computing is on the horizon, the mechanisms underlying these advanced systems remain largely enigmatic.
Diverse methodologies for developing quantum circuits are currently under exploration, and this acquisition will augment IBM’s existing approaches.
The financial specifics of the HRL transaction have not been disclosed; however, both Boeing and GM “will continue to collaborate with IBM” in advancing quantum technologies post-acquisition.
IBM has been a proponent of utilizing superconductors for constructing quantum circuits, while HRL specializes in crafting electron spin qubits—an approach that can be executed using the same fabrication equipment as conventional computing chips.
Notably, electron spin circuits can be engineered to a significantly smaller scale than their superconducting counterparts.
These diminutive circuits are anticipated to enhance IBM’s endeavors following the deployment of its “Blue Jay” system, which employs superconducting chips, anticipated to be operational by 2033. Jay Gambetta, director of IBM Research, elucidated this in an interview with Reuters on Wednesday.
“My team and I are firmly convinced that the future lies in either electron spins or superconductors, or possibly an amalgamation of both,” Gambetta articulated.
“HRL possesses an exceptional spin qubit team, arguably the foremost globally… I would not advocate a secondary path that lacks the potential for integration.”
In the near term, Gambetta indicated that HRL’s specialists, who currently manufacture chips at their California facility, are set to commence chip production at IBM’s advanced facility in New York.

Furthermore, he affirmed that IBM is concurrently exploring a spin-based quantum technology track, alongside its superconducting initiatives, “which we will unveil imminently.”
This dual technological pursuit marks IBM’s response to Google’s recent foray into an additional quantum technology based on neutral atoms.
