iPad Air on the Verge of Redesign
Apple’s iPad Air, which has maintained a similar aesthetic since 2020—with its flat edges, expansive front display, and Touch ID integrated into the top button—stands poised to embark on a significant transformation.
As four generations of chips, from the M1 to the M4, have been introduced without altering the device’s bezel width, the anticipated redesign of the more compact and budget-friendly iPad mini could signal a pivotal moment for the iPad Air.
A recent report from MacRumors suggests that a substantial external revamp of the iPad Air may materialize in early 2027.
This reimagining will be anchored by a conversion to OLED display technology, courtesy of Samsung Display, in conjunction with an upgrade to Apple’s cutting-edge M5 chip.
Such a shift would position the Air—currently the most stagnant design within Apple’s tablet ecosystem—as the next major recipient of an evolution that began with the iPad Pro in 2024.
Design Innovations Stem from iPad Mini
The predictability of this redesign can be attributed to a historical pattern: the iPad mini has frequently served as an experimental platform for design principles that subsequently surface in the iPad Air.
The iPad mini embraced the flat-edge aesthetic of the iPad Air in 2021 and has retained it through to the latest iPad mini 7. However, a reversal of roles appears imminent.
The forthcoming iPad mini 8, projected for release as early as October of this year, is rumored to feature an entirely restructured chassis, an OLED display, a novel vibration-based speaker system negating traditional speaker holes, and enhanced water resistance—navigating uncharted territory in Apple’s tablet design.
Should these modifications materialize, they would provide an insightful indication of what the Air may adopt approximately six months thereafter.
Continuity with iPad Pro’s Evolution
This approach is reminiscent of the developments surrounding the iPad Pro. When the Pro transitioned to OLED technology in 2024, it coincided with its first comprehensive redesign since 2018, including a notably slimmer profile.
The same methodology is anticipated to recur with the Air, albeit one tier lower in the product spectrum and following a few years behind.
It is crucial to note that the OLED panels envisaged for the iPad Air are unlikely to rival the iPad Pro’s more sophisticated tandem OLED technology in terms of brightness or cost.
Instead, they will adopt a more economical single-stack LTPS variant, aligning with the Air’s designation as a mid-tier product rather than the premier flagship tablet in Apple’s offerings.
While none of this information has been officially corroborated, and Apple remains tight-lipped regarding its 2027 product roadmap, the potential redesign of the iPad mini, should it come to fruition this year, may yield more insights into the future of the iPad Air than any direct leaks related to the Air itself.
