Robby Stein, the Vice President of Product for Google Search, recently announced a significant update to AI Mode, designed to enhance user experience by showcasing increased links to content creators during recipe searches.
This update seeks to address previous criticisms stemming from the synthesis of multiple recipes into what has been dubbed “Frankenstein recipes.” The intention is to streamline access to original recipe sites, facilitating a more intuitive user experience.
Modifications in AI Mode for Recipe Presentation
The latest intervention by Google features an appealing layout for recipes. Once a user clicks on a recipe, a side panel emerges that reveals images along with brief summaries. This enhancement allows users to navigate directly to the recipe sites for a more comprehensive exploration of the dishes.
According to Stein, this update has already been implemented. I experimented with variations of his example search term (“easy recipes for two”) and successfully generated a recipe panel as referenced.
The summary appeared on the left, while scrolling down revealed clickable images associated with the specific AI Mode results.

A challenge persists with the current AI Mode display: the clickable nature of the images is not immediately apparent. They may be misconstrued as mere decorative visuals.
Consequently, users might not intuitively recognize that these images can be interacted with to unveil a side panel containing additional information about the respective dish.

In his address, Robby Stein explicitly referenced the “feedback” that had been gathered regarding AI Mode’s approach to meal suggestions.
As noted by Robby Stein:
“We have actively received feedback concerning recipe outcomes within AI Mode, and we are implementing updates aimed at better connecting users with recipe creators on the internet.
Commencing today, users searching for meal suggestions, such as ‘easy dinners for two,’ can click on the dish to access pertinent links to recipe sites, accompanied by a brief overview to inspire their culinary pursuits.We also plan to incorporate additional valuable details like cooking times into a wider array of recipe results, which testers have indicated as beneficial for recipe selection. We acknowledge that our work is ongoing in this realm, so please stay tuned for forthcoming enhancements.”
He further shared a video showcasing this functionality:
