The recent Octoverse 2025 report by GitHub indicates a significant transformation on the horizon in the tech industry. By the year 2030, it is projected that India will surpass the United States in the number of software developers, marking a notable shift in global tech leadership.

India’s Rapid Ascent

India is swiftly narrowing the gap with the U.S., which currently boasts approximately 28 million developers. GitHub forecasts that India will cultivate an additional 35 million developers in the forthcoming years, leading to a total of about 57.5 million by 2030. In contrast, the U.S. is expected to reach around 54.7 million.

This remarkable growth in India can be attributed to robust government training initiatives. Additionally, AI tools that accommodate local languages are significantly enhancing coding accessibility for a wider demographic.

Parallel expansion is unfolding across the Asia-Pacific region, where an increasing number of young individuals are engaging with technology like never before.

A Worldwide Phenomenon

Brazil’s developer community is poised to escalate from 6.9 million to 19.6 million by 2030, positioning it as the third-largest globally. Meanwhile, China is projected to reach 17.7 million developers during the same timeframe.

This global surge is largely driven by advancements in AI. The advent of generative AI is radically transforming how developers operate and innovate. GitHub notes that TypeScript overtook Python as the most favored programming language in August.

TypeScript’s popularity has soared among developers, experiencing a staggering 66% increase in usage over the past year. Currently, it boasts over a million users, eclipsing several other programming languages. Python follows closely with around 850,000 users.

JavaScript holds the third position with approximately 427,000 users. This upward trajectory indicates a growing preference for TypeScript, primarily due to its enhanced stability and compatibility with contemporary AI-driven coding tools.

AI Tools Are Ubiquitous

In merely two years, the volume of AI projects hosted on GitHub has doubled, now encompassing roughly 4.3 million projects. This surge indicates that AI coding has transcended its status as an exclusive domain for experts.

It has now become commonplace for newcomers to leverage these tools, with around 80% activating Copilot within their initial week. This statistic underscores the widespread integration of AI tools in the programming landscape.

Currently, over 1.13 million public repositories are utilizing generative AI SDKs, representing a remarkable 178% increase from the previous year.

Many of these initiatives are evolving into larger, more sophisticated endeavors, highlighting that AI is progressing beyond mere experimentation into tangible, daily development processes.

The Road Ahead

GitHub has also highlighted the escalating significance of Model Context Protocol (MCP), which may facilitate developers in adhering to standardized conventions when constructing AI systems.

The emergence of various AI tools, such as Ollama and Ragflow, illustrates the increasing prevalence of local AI and enhanced workflows.

The prevailing message from GitHub that “AI isn’t replacing developers; it’s empowering them” is unequivocal. The future is unfolding before us as developers collaborate with AI to redefine the technological landscape.
