France has ardently championed the cause of European autonomy from American technology, yet the question remains: can it furnish credible alternatives? I undertook an evaluation of three French platforms.
President Emmanuel Macron of France has encountered the vexing predicament of being reliant on US technology platforms.
A pronounced incident occurred when an AI-generated video falsely asserting his overthrow circulated widely, only to have Meta initially deny the request for its removal.
“These entities mock us. They show no regard for maintaining public discourse, undermining the sovereignty of democracies and posing substantial risks,” Macron articulated to local media, directing his ire at American tech giants.
It is hardly surprising that the French populace demonstrates strong enthusiasm for European digital sovereignty, an aspiration that has gained significant momentum during Donald Trump’s presidency.
A recent survey indicates that 69% of French citizens endorse the notion of Europe supplanting US servers and data storage, while 68% concur that replacing American payment systems would be beneficial.
France’s technology sector is emerging as a frontrunner in Europe’s quest for self-sufficiency.
Notably, France stands as the sole nation on the continent to possess a cutting-edge large language model (LLM), known as Mistral. Furthermore, OVH Cloud is recognized as one of Europe’s foremost cloud service providers.
While the ambition exists, the route to achieving sovereignty may be arduous. Abandoning US technology, especially social media platforms and office software, poses substantial challenges, as collective migration is often requisite.
Here are three platforms for seamless and economical experimentation with European technology.
Qwant: an alternative to Google Search
If one believes Google Search to be irreplaceable, the French search engine Qwant presents an alternative perspective. Established in 2011 and hosted entirely within Europe, this engine is free of third-party cookies, trackers, or behavioral targeting.
Qwant’s primary revenue stems from advertisements displayed on results pages. Distinct from Google, where ads often overshadow top search results, Qwant clearly delineates its advertisements on the side.
Historically, Qwant utilized Microsoft’s Bing platform to supplement its own resources, which boasted 20 billion indexed web pages by 2023.
In a strategic collaboration, Qwant and Berlin-based Ecosia initiated the European Search Perspective in 2024 to establish an independent European web index, aiming to diminish dependency on Bing and Google. This initiative went live in August 2025.
Utilizing Qwant evokes a nostalgic experience reminiscent of earlier Google days, primarily due to its omission of AI-generated responses by default, resulting in a less cluttered interface.
However, a significant drawback of Qwant lies in its absence of a Google-like knowledge panel showcasing a restaurant’s operating hours, reviews, and contact details without navigating through links.
The verdict: Qwant serves as an excellent privacy-centric search engine, though it lacks certain features essential for fully supplanting Google Search.
Le Chat: an alternative to ChatGPT
As sentiments against OpenAI’s ChatGPT persist, and inquiries regarding the use of Anthropic’s Claude emerge amidst the Iran conflict, it may be prudent to explore less contentious alternatives.
Mistral AI’s chatbot Le Chat, translating to “the cat,” offers several subscription options. I opted for the Free variant, which allows access to most features at no expense.
The Free plan does not necessitate account registration for basic functionalities like inquiry submissions, though registration is essential for utilizing its four specialized agents focused on data analysis, document summarization, personal tutoring, and writing aid.

Le Chat underscores its commitment to privacy by eschewing chat logs for training models and ensuring that all data remains within European territories.
For a user with minimal engagement with LLMs, primarily for advanced search and translation, Le Chat met my expectations satisfactorily.
Nevertheless, the chatbot trails ChatGPT in image generation capabilities and is prone to errors like its counterparts. For instance, during my attempts to learn basic French, I detected a mistake, despite my limited language prowess.
Similar to American tech conglomerates, Mistral is not without controversy. The company faces allegations of utilizing copyrighted content, including works such as the Harry Potter series, to train its AI model.
The verdict: A practical alternative to ChatGPT for basic tasks, with a significant emphasis on user privacy.
Deezer: an alternative to YouTube Music
While Sweden’s Spotify captures widespread recognition as the preeminent European streaming service, France’s Deezer predates it, having launched in 2007.
Deezer serves as an alternative to various US and European platforms, facilitating the effortless migration of libraries from Apple Music, YouTube, YouTube Music, Tidal, Amazon Music, and Spotify, among others.
The platform features a free ad-supported tier alongside a paid Premium subscription costing €11.99 monthly, often accompanied by a one-month free trial. This contrasts with YouTube Music’s price of €7.99 and Apple Music’s €10.99.

However, Deezer’s podcast selection is relatively weak, particularly in non-English offerings. Conversely, it boasts superior CD-quality audio at 16-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC files, which poses challenges for YouTube Music.
The platform has implemented an Artist-Centric Payment Model, wherein royalties are distributed based on genuine listener engagement.
This structure allows independent and niche artists to garner higher earnings per stream on Deezer compared to platforms employing a pro-rata royalty distribution method, such as Spotify and YouTube Music.
The verdict: A user-friendly streaming service with an extensive library and exceptional audio quality, facilitating a smooth transition from other platforms.
