In a striking departure from traditional expectations, Matt Garman, the CEO of Amazon Web Services (AWS), has articulated a compelling narrative for impending job seekers, notably including his own children, regarding the necessity of skill development in an era increasingly defined by artificial intelligence (AI).
In a recent dialogue with CNBC, Garman underscored his conviction that the cultivation of soft skills should take precedence over conventional paths such as coding, information technology, or even medicine.
He ardently advised, “Pursue and hone critical thinking skills during your collegiate endeavors, irrespective of your chosen field.”
Garman elaborated, stating, “A primary objective of attending college is to foster critical thinking. It transcends mere skill acquisition; it is fundamentally about becoming a discerning thinker. In many respects, this will emerge as the most pivotal skill in the future.”
Soft Skills as the Cornerstone of Success
Further expounding his views, Garman posited that he regards critical thinking as “the foremost key to success in the AI landscape.”
He elaborated, stating, “Creativity and critical thinking will be indispensable. Moreover, flexibility and the capacity to learn and adapt are essential qualities that will rival any specific skill you may acquire.”
Garman emphasizes the need for individuals to excel in initiatives where AI struggles to supplant human capabilities. Tasks such as critical analysis, nuanced decision-making, and innovative solutions remain areas where AI still falters, as highlighted by various studies on the subject.
In addition to critical thinking, Garman identified two other cardinal soft skills: adaptability and effective communication. He asserted, “Soft skills are paramount today, and they will likely hold even greater significance in the future.”
“Most clients still cherish direct interactions with humans, seeking personalized insights and attention. Proficient interpersonal skills will remain remarkably vital for the foreseeable future,” he affirmed.

Garman’s views resonate with contemporaries in the field. In September, Ramprakash Ramamoorthy, Director of AI Research at Zoho Corp, expressed similar sentiments.
He contended that the human advantage in critical thinking and reasoning would perpetually hold sway in an age dominated by AI and large language models.
Job roles are poised for evolution, making it crucial for individuals to leverage AI as seamlessly as they integrated the Internet into their lives.
Nonetheless, the innate human strengths in reasoning and critical thought will remain indispensable, even amid the rise of AI and large language models, he remarked in a recent interview with PTI.
