Federal Government Intensifies Recruitment for Technologists to Propel AI Initiatives
The federal government is amplifying its efforts to recruit technologists across various agencies, aligning with the White House’s objective to enhance artificial intelligence capabilities.
The Office of Personnel Management (OPM), in conjunction with multiple federal bodies, has inaugurated the United States Tech Force, a recruitment initiative designed to attract technological talent to the federal sector.
Prospective recruits will engage in “mission-critical” projects across departments such as State, Agriculture, Defense, Transportation, Energy, Veterans Affairs, among others, as highlighted in an OPM media release.
The recruitment initiative is spearheaded by OPM, the General Services Administration, the Office of Management and Budget, and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.
“This is a clarion call,” OPM Director Scott Kupor asserted in a statement. If you aspire to contribute to your country’s leadership in the era of swift technological advancement, we need you.
Tech Force presents a unique opportunity to spearhead projects of national significance while fostering robust career paths in both public service and the private sector.
The Tech Force program is structured as a two-year endeavor, enabling participants to collaborate with agencies and private-sector technology partners while acquiring technical proficiencies.
The second Trump administration has embraced advancements in artificial intelligence, emphasizing the imperative to maintain a competitive edge over China on this pivotal economic and national security front.
In July, the White House unveiled “America’s AI Action Plan,” and earlier this month, the president ratified an executive order that empowers the U.S. Attorney General to initiate legal action against states enacting laws that hinder AI utilization.
However, the extent of vacancies within the federal government’s technology sector remains somewhat ambiguous. In March, approximately 70 researchers, product managers, and others from the 18F consultancy received termination notices.
This downsizing was orchestrated by the now-dissolved Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which axed thousands of positions in a matter of weeks.
Concurrently, about 20 personnel from the U.S. Digital Service, part of the Office of Management and Budget, resigned rather than join the DOGE team.
To date, a staggering 317,000 federal employees have exited due to firings, resignations, retirements, or other factors, as reported by Bloomberg News.

Prominent technology firms, including Amazon Web Services, Apple, Nvidia, IBM, Meta, Dell Technologies, and Google Public Sector, have already established partnerships with Tech Force.
“Tech Force will serve as a formidable force multiplier, forging a pathway to attract premier private-sector talent to drive a novel era of American AI leadership within the federal government while delivering tangible benefits for American taxpayers,” stated Josh Gruenbaum, Federal Acquisition Service Commissioner.
