As AI becomes ingrained in organizational structures, it is expected to “simultaneously give rise to new health issues and challenges,” as articulated by lead researcher Dr. Lara Shemtob.
“Evidence indicates that the employment landscape is transforming, with specific sectors and roles facing greater influence from AI,” she remarked. “It is crucial for organizations to be cognizant of these shifts.”
Rather than fearing AI’s encroachment on job security, Dr. Shemtob emphasized the importance of understanding how the implementation of new technologies is impacting employees.
For instance, she noted that some workers may find their responsibilities evolving to encompass more interaction with technology rather than engaging with human colleagues.
“Interpersonal dynamics may be altered when individuals begin communicating more with machines than with fellow workers,” she elaborated. “This is an issue we urge employers to consider.”
Moreover, she pointed out that individuals who didn’t initially assume supervisory roles might unexpectedly encounter added managerial responsibilities over AI systems.
Additionally, she highlighted the phenomenon of AI “hallucination,” which necessitates more meticulous oversight of work, thereby imposing greater demands on employees.
These challenges could manifest as a “hidden workload,” potentially undermining the purported advantages of technological integration. The dynamics of workplace relationships may be transformed by AI implementation.
“As AI absorbs routine tasks, human roles may transition towards oversight, problem-solving, or emotional labor, each carrying unique psychological implications,” noted Dr. Shemtob.
The research team also raised concerns regarding escalating “role ambiguity” as AI sophistication evolves, and tasks once attributed to humans may increasingly shift.
This ambiguity could exacerbate mental health concerns, such as unease, stress, and anxiety.
“It is well-established that factors contributing to work-related stress include role ambiguity, and change itself can be a significant stressor,” she stated.

Dr. Shemtob was eager to underscore the advantages AI technologies can offer in professional environments.
She expressed optimism that government initiatives aimed at leveraging AI for the workforce—through heightened investment and technology adoption—could yield considerable benefits.
The AI Opportunities Action Plan has united government officials with prominent tech enterprises and investors to establish AI growth zones, ensuring that British enterprises and researchers remain at the forefront of AI innovation.

For example, the research team posits that AI can help manage “hazards” by decreasing human involvement in perilous or psychologically taxing tasks, such as content moderation online, although they acknowledged the potential for “issues with appropriate decision-making.”
Furthermore, they indicated that emerging technologies are aiding occupational health professionals in reaching and assisting a broader audience in need.
However, to harness the complete spectrum of benefits, workplaces must adopt AI “with intention.”
“The rapid pace of change presents challenges in keeping abreast and thoroughly engaging with these developments,” she concluded.
“We advocate for a more conscious approach to utilizing AI; it is imperative for all of us to actively assess our engagement with this technology.”
