Peeyush Ranjan, a distinguished former executive with experience at Google, Airbnb, and Flipkart, has unveiled Fermi.ai, an AI-centric education technology startup dedicated to revolutionising high school education in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
The initiative commences with a focus on Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry, aiming to combat the trend of shortcut learning driven by contemporary AI, while prioritising deeper conceptual comprehension and critical reasoning over mere instant gratification.
Global Outreach
Established in Singapore, Fermi.ai has expanded its reach through subsidiaries located in India and the United States. This venture has its roots in the Meraki Labs ecosystem, where Ranjan collaborates with Mukesh Bansal, co-founder of Walmart-owned Myntra.
Distinct from traditional AI tools that emphasise swiftness, Fermi.ai is structured to nurture what the team refers to as “productive struggle” — a detailed learning journey that cultivates substantial insights for educators while encouraging students to develop robust foundational knowledge.
“Educators across India and the US are reporting that although students can arrive at answers more quickly than ever, their conceptual understanding remains underwhelming,” stated Ranjan, CEO of Fermi.ai.
The platform endeavours to enhance cognitive engagement rather than supplant it, thus safeguarding productive struggle and mastery of concepts.
A Unique Tutoring Paradigm
The approach taken by Fermi.ai involves a systematic tutoring methodology as opposed to merely providing direct answers.
Utilising a stylus-first digital interface, the platform promotes handwritten problem-solving while offering diagnostic insights that enable educators to pinpoint precisely where a student’s reasoning falters.
Bansal emphasised the startup’s commitment to filling a significant void in AI-supported education. “Fermi.ai transcends mere answers; it elucidates the thought process of students, affording teachers the visibility necessary to guide them towards mastery,” he remarked.
Pilot Study Insights
Prior to its public debut, Fermi.ai undertook a three-month pilot program, engaging 79 students and administering over 15,000 conceptual assessments.

The findings indicated enhanced conceptual mastery, with students initially struggling demonstrating noteworthy improvement and becoming increasingly self-reliant in their learning, as reported by the company.
The cloud-based platform is currently accessible free of charge to students, with educators and institutions invited to participate in the pilot program scheduled for 2026.
