Dordt University Advances Cybersecurity Initiatives Amid National Security Awareness Month
In observance of National Security Awareness Month, Dordt University is actively engaging its employees and students in initiatives aimed at identifying and addressing cybersecurity threats. This endeavor is pivotal in enhancing digital resilience across the campus.
“Information security is a collective duty,” emphasizes Reed Munson, the compliance manager of computer services at Dordt.
“Safe computing practices are imperative not only for personal online safety but also for the protection of the institution at large. Cybersecurity threats, particularly phishing attacks, can inflict substantial damage—affecting both individuals and organizations alike.”
In support of its cybersecurity efforts, Dordt collaborates with KnowBe4, a premier provider of cybersecurity training solutions. Faculty and staff engage with succinct, interactive video tutorials followed by assessments to evaluate their understanding.
This platform also enables Dordt to conduct simulated phishing campaigns, empowering employees to identify and report dubious emails effectively.
Training Employees to Combat Cyber Threats
“Analogous to how bank tellers receive training to detect counterfeit currency, we equip our employees to discern the deceptive tactics employed by hackers in phishing schemes,” explains Munson.
“Should a significant number of individuals fall prey to a test email, it indicates the necessity for enhanced, targeted training efforts.”
Phishing continues to be the predominant vector for cybercriminals, who frequently employ fraudulent emails to harvest sensitive information, including passwords, financial credentials, and personal details.
These nefarious activities can escalate dramatically, with offenders mimicking executives’ emails to deceive staff into executing unauthorized transactions.
The cybersecurity education initiatives at Dordt University also encompass students. Computer Services employs on-campus digital displays, informational posters, and personalized discussions at the Help Desk to reinforce secure practices.
Security reminders are seamlessly integrated into student orientation, ensuring that incoming undergraduates commence their journey at Dordt with a robust understanding of online safety protocols.
Munson urges the entire Dordt community to adopt straightforward yet critical measures to safeguard their digital information:
- Utilize strong, distinctive passwords for each account.
- Activate two-factor authentication wherever feasible.
- Refrain from transmitting sensitive information via email.
- Maintain updated software and operating systems.
