Technology Sector Faces Major Layoffs as Demand for Forward-Deployed Engineers Soars
The technology sector has witnessed a staggering reduction of over 100,000 jobs in 2026. Contrary to this dismal trend, one specific engineering position has experienced a remarkable resurgence—a staggering 729% increase in job postings year-over-year.
This role, known as the Forward-Deployed Engineer (FDE), offers an inviting salary range of $170,000 to upwards of $200,000. Presently, it stands as one of the few stable employment opportunities within the industry.
Indeed’s data shows that listings for this role skyrocketed from 643 in April 2025 to 5,330 by April 2026, as noted by information provided to Business Insider.
Prominent companies such as Anthropic, OpenAI, Stripe, Google Cloud, and Palantir are actively seeking candidates, along with McKinsey’s AI division, QuantumBlack.
The disparity between the FDE position and the broader technology landscape is stark. According to Layoffs. fyi, there have been approximately 115,000 job eliminations from over 150 firms this year alone; Trueup estimates that this number may reach as high as 148,000.
Noteworthy companies contributing to this figure include Meta, which cut 8,000 positions, followed by Cisco with 4,000, Intuit with 3,000, Cloudflare with 1,100, and Snap with 1,000.
Additionally, Coinbase has laid off 700 employees, while PayPal plans to reduce its workforce by nearly 4,800 over the next few years. LinkedIn, Wix, Groupon, Webflow, ClickUp, and Amazon are also among those reducing their staff.

The demand for FDEs is difficult to refute. Box CEO Aaron Levie recently labeled FDEs as “one of the most crucial roles for AI implementations” in a LinkedIn post. Meanwhile, Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian indicated a surge in FDE recruitment owing to escalating client requests.
So, what exactly does an FDE do? In essence, they facilitate the integration of AI tools within customer operations by tailoring technology to fit existing workflows and ensuring stability post-launch.

Consulting Firms Now Seek Engineers with Strong Presentation Skills
The hiring surge is not limited to AI laboratories. Consulting firms have stealthily evolved into conduits for Silicon Valley’s latest innovations, necessitating that consultants possess technical expertise.
A QuantumBlack job listing for a Principal Forward Deployment Engineer specifies a requirement of over eight years of experience in software, platforms, or infrastructure, along with an educational background in computer science, machine learning, or a related discipline.
Alex Singla, a senior partner at McKinsey who co-directs QuantumBlack, stated that the organization seeks individuals with “a dual talent for being an exceptional McKinsey consultant and a proficient technologist,” followed by training to develop expertise in both areas.
The implications of these developments are unsettling yet transparent. Companies continue to implement workforce cuts while becoming increasingly selective in their hiring practices.
Those capable of seamlessly integrating AI into Fortune 500 workflows are being compensated accordingly.
