Fourth National Cybersecurity Day Commences in Guantánamo
GUANTÁNAMO, Cuba, Nov 21 (ACN) — Kicking off with a conference focusing on cybersecurity and the intricate dynamics of artificial intelligence (AI), the 4th National Cybersecurity Day commenced this Thursday in Guantánamo. Organized by the Ministry of Communications of the Republic of Cuba, the event is slated to continue until November 30.
From the Computer Palace in the city, Master of Science Arnaldo Fernández Basulto—an esteemed professor and specialist affiliated with the Observatory of the University of Guantánamo—emphasized the critical necessity of safeguarding institutional networks, personal data, and financial information amidst the escalating tide of digital threats.
He underscored the prevalent risks, including viruses, data hijacking, identity fraud, and various automated incursions, citing the alarming incidence of digital extortion reported in Europe as a pertinent example.
Highlighting local issues, the recent dismantlement of a fraudulent network operating within the province was detailed. This network exploited social engineering techniques and digital mechanisms to ensnare victims in deceptive transactions involving the sale of US dollars.
Common strategies employed included fraudulent messages impersonating acquaintances to solicit financial assistance. Furthermore, the emergence of AI-generated compromising content for extortion and the proliferation of disinformation—be it false news, images, or videos—was noted as a growing concern that undermines societal trust.
The specialist elucidated that while malefactors harness AI to concoct nefarious code and counterfeit documentation, this same technology possesses the potential to act as a formidable defense.
Proactive threat detection, instantaneous incident response automation, and the generation of hyper-realistic attack simulations for staff training can significantly bolster security measures.
It was posited that the integration of AI into institutional frameworks is not merely advantageous but essential for effective defense. Participants, including specialists and technicians from relevant sectors, converged on the imperative need for a paradigm shift in mindset, along with enhanced digital literacy among citizens to surmount these challenges.
Among the notable advancements in AI utilization, the national AI initiative “Cecilia” and an innovative document management project spearheaded by the Telecommunications Company Etecsa were prominently mentioned.
Additionally, the Solvisión Telecentro is in the process of developing two prototypes of virtual presenters, with a training program in audiovisual production utilizing this technology slated to commence in January.
Explorations into applications for Guantánamo’s radio stations are also underway, including the introduction of virtual announcers, which could pave the way for uninterrupted 24-hour programming while alleviating the physical demands on personnel.

Moreover, training is being initiated to leverage AI for the meticulous analysis of financial statements in the business sector.
The 4th National Cybersecurity Day will feature a variety of technology fairs, contests, and workshops, sponsored by the Union of Computer Scientists of Cuba, the Youth Computer and Electronics Clubs, Xetid, and other entities, with a focus on promoting fundamental aspects of digital security.
