Call to Action: Support Local Businesses This Festive Season in New England North West
Residents of New England North West are being urged to bolster local small enterprises during the upcoming holiday season, as recent data unveils the escalating financial challenges many are encountering.
The latest Business Conditions Survey from Business NSW indicates a marked decline in consumer spending, with customers increasingly pursuing discounts and postponing invoice payments relative to last year.
This behaviour is particularly strenuous for small businesses already contending with surging operational costs.
“Our local enterprises are genuinely struggling,” remarked Stephanie Cameron, Regional Director of Business NSW for New England North West. “With inflation now at 3.8% and no prospects for interest rate reductions, our members report that shoppers are still tightening their financial grips.”
The survey, which collated feedback from 700 businesses statewide, reveals the foremost cost pressures facing the NENW region: insurance, energy, and government-imposed taxes and charges.
Moreover, issues surrounding workers’ compensation linger, with half of the local enterprises cautioning that escalating premiums could compel them to reduce their workforce by 36% over three years.
Increasing consumer price sensitivity is compounding these predicaments. The survey highlights the following trends:
- 32% of businesses indicate customers are now taking longer to settle invoices,
- 30% are experiencing heightened negotiations on pricing, and
- 24% report patrons opting for less expensive alternatives.
“These trends illustrate how household budgets are constricting, and consumer confidence is waning,” Ms. Cameron noted.
“For many smaller businesses, deferred payments and the necessity to offer continual discounts are severely impacting cash flow.”
She emphasized the vital contributions of small businesses to community life: These enterprises are the heartbeat of our main streets.
They sponsor local sports teams and provide employment opportunities for our youth. Now, more than ever, it is crucial for our community to rally behind them and purchase locally to ensure their survival.
The data also encapsulates a somber outlook on consumer behaviour as Christmas approaches, revealing that 42% of businesses report diminished purchasing frequency among customers, and 37% observe a reduction in average order sizes.
Merely 18% of businesses note an uptick in purchase frequency, while a scant 12% report larger transaction sizes.
Despite these ongoing hurdles, a flicker of optimism persists. Business confidence in the region has dropped to -60.4 this quarter, yet forecasts for the subsequent quarter have shown a significant upturn, climbing to -20.8—a remarkable 40-point increase.
“This 40-point surge in business confidence suggests that regional businesses anticipate ongoing investment and job growth spurred by local projects such as Baiada, the University of New England, Livestock Exchange Saleyards, Tamworth Jockey Club’s new stables, and the recently established Essential Energy Training Academy,” Ms. Cameron elaborated.
“Having been a business owner myself, I recognize the significance of fostering business growth to capitalize on our economic potential. When Regional NSW thrives, it augurs well for the entirety of NSW and the nation,” she concluded.
