Startup nearing completion of a fundraising initiative that could elevate its valuation to over US$30 billion
MOONSHOT AI has informed its investors of a forthcoming initial public offering (IPO) potentially within the next six months, strategically positioning itself to capitalize on capital markets following its recent model that has disrupted perceptions of China’s rapid technological advancements, resulting in tumultuous effects on global tech equities.
The pioneering AI firm from China has formally disseminated a shareholder resolution to its investors, soliciting approval for a listing in Hong Kong.
Sources acquainted with the situation have indicated that the notification signals that an IPO could materialize within the forthcoming half-year.
Currently, Moonshot is concluding its funding round, which may propel the relatively young startup’s valuation past the US$30 billion threshold, as asserted by individuals familiar with the discussions.
The startup determined that the timing was opportune after achieving an annual recurring revenue of US$300 million in June, according to sources who requested anonymity amid private negotiations.
In a previous report by Bloomberg News, Moonshot was noted to have garnered US$200 million in annual recurring revenue by April.
Preparations for the IPO were initiated prior to the recent launch of the Kimi K3 on July 17, a state-of-the-art model that is claimed to surpass its competitors, save for Anthropic’s Claude Fable 5 and OpenAI’s GPT-5.6, in terms of overall performance.
Observers have expressed admiration for the model’s substantial capacity—boasting 2.8 trillion parameters—positioned as an open-weight format, which allows users the flexibility to download and tailor its specifications.
An IPO would signify a pivotal achievement for this swiftly advancing startup, co-founded in early 2023 by Yang Zhilin, a former academic at Tsinghua University with prior affiliations to Meta Platforms and Alphabet’s Google.
The company’s name, which translates to “Dark Side of the Moon” in Chinese, is a homage to Yang’s preferred Pink Floyd album.
The Beijing-based venture began contemplating a Hong Kong listing earlier in 2026, engaging in discussions with China International Capital and Goldman Sachs Group regarding the orchestration of this offering, as reported by Bloomberg News.
Recent coverage by China’s PEdaily has shed light on the anticipated timing of Moonshot’s listing.
China’s AI race evolving beyond mere price competition
Since its inception, the company has operated alongside more prominent entities such as DeepSeek, which itself stirred disruptions in Silicon Valley with a potent model in 2025.
However, it has retained its position at the cutting edge of Chinese industry advancements amidst assertive laboratories like Alibaba Group Holding’s Qwen, MiniMax Group, and Z.AI.
Moonshot is in the midst of dismantling a “red chip” structure, a maneuver aimed at facilitating a more seamless overseas listing process. Representatives from Moonshot opted not to comment outside standard business hours.
The startup’s recent breakthroughs exemplify the rapid evolution of China’s AI landscape, transcending competition based solely on pricing strategies.
Artificial Analysis has rated Kimi K3 above Anthropic’s Opus 4.8 on several leading benchmarks, thus designating it as the inaugural Chinese open-weight model to achieve such an accolade.
The pricing of Kimi K3 aligns closely with Anthropic Sonnet levels, indicating that Moonshot anticipates commanding a premium relative to other Chinese models, due to the product’s outstanding capabilities.
The company is currently offering tiered subscription plans for its chatbot and extending its foundational technology to enterprise clients.
Recently, it introduced a multifunctional AI agent titled Kimi Work. Overall, while its business is still eclipsed by larger players like Z.AI, which is on a trajectory to generate US$1 billion in annual sales, Moonshot continues to advance steadily.
As the Chinese government intensifies its support for domestic AI initiatives, Moonshot is poised to navigate market dynamics, buoyed by President Xi Jinping’s endorsement of China’s advancements in cost-effective AI technologies and calls for a more open global technological framework.

Meanwhile, DeepSeek has outlined plans for an IPO in 2027 while concurrently seeking additional funding from investors, seeking to expand its arsenal for developing AI services and marketing them globally at markedly lower prices than its American rivals.
