OpenAI is reportedly preparing to unveil the most significant transformation of ChatGPT since its inception in 2022, aiming to evolve the chatbot into a formidable “superapp.”
In the wake of its impending initial public offering (IPO) this year, the company is actively exploring novel revenue avenues, a strategy aligned with its ongoing internal restructuring.
According to insights gathered from over a dozen current and former employees, The Financial Times has reported that the San Francisco-based entity is reconfiguring its resources to captivate lucrative business clientele and engage more intensely with competitors like Anthropic.
Under mounting pressure to delineate a viable profitability trajectory for its upcoming IPO, OpenAI appears to be transitioning from merely responding to inquiries to innovating AI “agents” capable of autonomously executing intricate daily tasks.
“Chat is dead,” proclaimed a senior OpenAI staffer in an interview with the publication.
The Ascendance of AI Agents and Coding Instruments
OpenAI executives now perceive ChatGPT, which boasts a staggering user base of one billion, as a conduit to entice clients into higher-value, subscription-based services, consequently paving the way for advanced tools.
This forthcoming overhaul will purportedly spotlight the “Codex” coding platform, designed to generate software from succinct text directives. The strategic pivot also emphasizes the burgeoning role of AI agents.
“Our objective is to develop personal agents that assist individuals across all facets of life, whether personal or professional,” stated Thibault Sottiaux, OpenAI’s head of core product and platform.
“You can engage with it via mobile, desktop, or on the web. Even while driving, conversation is facilitated,” Sottiaux elaborated.
Revamping the ChatGPT Application for IPO Preparation
The imminent upgrade, set to commence in the upcoming weeks, will initially alter the user interface of ChatGPT across web browsers and mobile applications, as highlighted in the report.
Users can anticipate a fresh design, directing them towards coding functionalities, image generation capabilities, and externally developed third-party applications from partners such as Canva and Booking.com.
Over time, OpenAI intends to eliminate manual prompts altogether, banking on the AI’s capability to intuitively discern user intentions, as detailed in the report.

To actualize this ambitious vision, OpenAI has undergone an extensive corporate reorganization. Teams from ChatGPT and Codex have been amalgamated under Sottiaux’s leadership, following the notable exits of several senior executives, including the former product head Kevin Weil.
