California Unveils “Quantum California” Initiative at UC Berkeley
BERKELEY, Calif. – On Friday, leaders from California congregated at the University of California, Berkeley, to inaugurate “Quantum California,” a comprehensive initiative designed to propel the advancement of quantum technology across the state.
This initiative seeks to amalgamate efforts from government, academia, and industry, with the aim of stimulating innovation and generating employment opportunities within the Golden State.
“California has consistently been the cradle of future advancements,” remarked Gov. Gavin Newsom. “With Quantum California, we are committed to ensuring that the forthcoming technological revolution is born within our borders.”
The event was orchestrated by Governor Newsom’s office, in partnership with the Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz) and the University of California Office of the President. It follows the recent enactment of significant legislation and funding designed to sustain California’s preeminence in the quantum sector.
Quantum technology, encompassing domains such as computing, sensing, and communication, possesses the potential for transformative impact. Its innovations promise to revolutionize various sectors, including medicine, climate science, and artificial intelligence.
During the gathering, experts deliberated on breakthroughs and pragmatic applications in quantum technology, particularly emphasizing scenarios such as drug discovery and sophisticated manufacturing processes.
California stands out as a leader in this arena, housing both the National Science Foundation and the Department of Energy quantum research facilities. The state is also a hub for top-tier talent and thriving companies within the quantum domain.
“Quantum California brings together some of the world’s most esteemed researchers, distinguished businesses, and influential state leaders to enhance technology, science, and economic power—ensuring that California remains the globe’s epicenter of innovation,” stated University of California President James B. Milliken.
Moreover, Governor Newsom recently enacted legislation supporting the quantum sector, including Assembly Bill 940, championed by Assemblymember Buffy Wicks.
This bill aims to convert quantum research into industrial applications, bolstered by a $4 million allocation from the state’s budget.
“Quantum California is designed to transform discovery into opportunities,” noted Dee Dee Myers, Senior Advisor to Gov. Newsom and Director of GO-Biz.
“No other locality in the world can harness this level of talent, technology, and ingenuity as a catalyst for economic development.”
California’s economy remains a national titan, excelling in new business formation, venture capital investment, and beyond.
