During my initial months in the health sector, I was primarily focused on crafting immaculate code and refining queries, feeling quite accomplished. However, an unsettling moment arose when I witnessed a data feed stagnate mid-session.
Instead of producing errors, the downstream model continued to churn out predictions — confidently erroneous — until a keen observer from the user acceptance team sensed an anomaly. There were no alarms. No contingency plans. Just silent, costly misinformation.
This incident profoundly reshaped my perspective on both the tech industry and the financial domain in which I presently operate.
A critical lesson about financial systems, one often overlooked in computer science curricula, is that no one values the elegance of your solution if it falters without notice.
Regulators do not award partial credit. A compliance lapse discovered months later is far more detrimental than a system collapse that recovers in ten minutes; at least a crash incorporates a timestamp.
Prior to my current role and my stint in healthcare AI, I was immersed in academic research, particularly in medical imaging.
With over a hundred citations to my name, it may seem impressive until you realize that much of my work hinged less on “brilliant scientist” and more on the relentless scrutiny of whether my data pipeline was leaking test samples into the training set.

This enthusiasm is understandable; however, I frequently encounter engineers who can fine-tune a model within a matter of hours yet have never contemplated the repercussions if the service on which it depends fails.
Or how the output might manifest six months post-deployment when the data distribution has subtly shifted. Or whether there’s anyone monitoring those changes.
To reiterate, demos lack Service Level Agreements.
The prevailing mentality I discern among younger engineers, and, frankly, some more seasoned colleagues, is that infrastructure is the responsibility of a different department. You construct the model and pass it along; your job concludes there.
This might have sufficed when AI was a limited academic pursuit. However, it falters when the model represents the product — one that makes real decisions in real time for real individuals. The architect of the model must assume accountability for the entire workflow, not merely the parameters.
Concise statements carry weight. While longer ones hold their own merit, the brevity often resonates differently.
What does this translate to in daily practice? It entails being the individual who poses challenging inquiries during design reviews. What contingency plans exist if the feature store encounters issues? How can we ascertain that this performs as anticipated three months hence?
Can we precisely recreate the rationale behind a model’s output for a specific request if called upon? This latter concern arises more frequently than one might surmise, particularly in regulated sectors.
None of these inquiries pertain solely to machine learning; they are systemic concerns. Yet, if you are the architect of the model, these challenges are now intrinsically yours, whether you embrace them or not.
I did not arrive at this understanding via a strategic plan but rather through a series of flawed pipelines and years of research, where “it worked on my machine” was a phrase that could end a career.
The recurrent theme has always been “intelligent individuals, effective models, but insufficient regard for the system housing those models.”
The engineers who will be pivotal in the upcoming five years may not necessarily boast the finest benchmarks.

They will be those who recognize that a model represents merely a component, not an end product. Components encounter breakdowns, experience drift, degrade, and fail in ways that no training run could ever foresee.
The notebook is merely the inception. Understanding the aftermath of closing it — that is the crux of the role.
